Culture has changed since Covid. My two cents as you socialize is to keep your personal life and opinions of others to yourself. Listen more and share sparingly. You’d be surprised how much gossip goes around. This will also help keep the egos and animosity mentioned above at bay.
Firm culture has depleted. I have tried to make friends or be social but there are too many egos and animosity for me to do so. If you feel a certain way understand it’s not you
I feel like culture runs across the entire spectrum depending on group and firm so you can really get anything you want realistically so long as you put in the work to talk to people in the group before hand. Also keep in mind associate turnover can be high so most of the culture is set from the top so looking to what partners and practice group leaders are like is important too. Counting summers and full time associate roles I’ve been at 4 firms and seen a lot of group dynamics within all of them so don’t even know where to begin. Being the only person of your background in the office doesn’t sound like a great place to start but that’s not always indicative. What’s your take been? 👀
At my previous firm I was the only Black woman and the only Latina of color in my class. It was not great. People rarely came into the office unless forced. All of the junior people of color in my practice group, including me, were gone by the end of my first year. This is an extreme example and hopefully is not the norm. With that said I do have 3 friends from my previous firm that I am still in touch with. We just didn’t work with each other directly on non-pro bono matters. Pro bono projects might be a good way to meet people, if you have capacity. It tends to be a self-selecting group.
Some firms are known to be "nicer" than others; but post COVID culture is something different. People tend not to be as social.
If you like the work overall and the people aren’t crazy, I would try to match their energy a bit but of course you should let your personality shine as well.
I think this depends on the firm size and region. My firm isn’t crazy social we are a smaller office but we do have the monthly attorney lunch which is casual. Our larger firm also facilitates retreats twice a year and people come in a couple times a week. If your supervising attorney is in more often I would try and be there more often too unless told you don’t have to be.
