I’m based in Chicago making $95k with five years of experience, and I just found out the new junior hire is starting at $82k. I love my team and the benefits are solid, but that narrow gap feels like a slap in the face given the level of strategy I’m handling. I’m wondering if I should bring this up during my 1-on-1 or if I’m just going to look bitter. Does this pay scale seem normal, or am I being severely underpaid?

This isn't narrow, that would be a couple thousands difference and you're making $10k+ more. You will never get a substantial raise in your own org and seems on par with the pay band for a lead.

This would not go over well in a 1-1. Make the choice to leave or be happy that you're in a team you love to work with, and check the ego at the door.

It’s based on market conditions.

To be sincere if you’re in Chicago, that gap really isn’t where it should be for 5 years of experience your value should be more clearly reflected.

That said, don’t focus only on salary comparisons. With your experience, you’re in a strong position to start something of your own. Even a small online business or consulting on the side can grow into something much bigger.

Long term, building a business and having a team working for you gives you more control over your income and growth than any fixed role.

So raise it professionally where you are but also start thinking beyond the job.

You will really only ever get big pay jumps by moving around nowadays. If you want to see bigger reward from your experience, its time to look elsewhere

I mean....13 grand ain't chicken feed.

How much stock do you put on benefits? I have two offers with stark differences in benefits. Job 1: role I want, but benefit sucks (2 weeks paternity leave, 20% coinsurance). Job 2: role is okay but higher level and great benefits (16 weeks paternity, 0% coinsurance, 5 more days of vacation). Total comp is the same though. I wonder if I should just focus on role but Job 2 is a large company, so I can move around after 2-3 years I’d expect. Thoughts?

Just started in-house and my days are full of meetings with little time in between to analyze or process anything. Is this typical? I keep taking lots of notes but haven’t had a chance to really review and reflect on my notes, to follow up and investigate or do any strategic or legal analysis. Lots of on the fly work for now. Maybe it’s like this just the first few days where I’m getting the lay of the land? But I suspect it’ll be like this for a while… Any tips appreciated.

Have a big interview tomorrow. The question I dread the most is about why you’re looking for a new job. Do I just make something else up entirely?
