I'm scared about taking PTO after my manager said its “unlimited if you’re responsible about it.” I had a feeling I wouldn't like this setup and now I know I won’t.

Unlimited PTO is a sham so your employer doesn’t owe you any money for unused PTO when you’re leaving.

likefunny

In my experience at places where unlimited PTO is real, the harder you work, the more PTO you can/should take. Take your PTO. Schedule it early. It's for recharging.

like

My son had unlimited and took a crap at first due to moving, getting married. Then switched to another plant and is working 7 days a week. The unlimited is up to approval and keeps people from hording them until end of year, no carryover and of course no payout when they leave company. Actually a savings for the company. No one’s gonna ask for 3 weeks off. If you had that much accrued after years of service then yes you would.

likefunny

I’d still follow the general conventions of traditional PTO. Usually they give employees anywhere from 15-30 days off, with more senior roles getting closer to 30, and mid levels somewhere at 21. If it was a limited PTO, I’d use 2/3 for large week-long breaks and save 1/3 as “sick days”. Since you can’t roll over unused days to the next year or cash it out at termination, I’d use the full amount of average PTO days for your role type (approximately 21 days/year for mid level, or 30 days/year for senior level).

like

I do not like “unlimited policies”. If favors the employer over the employee in that as “Partner 1” indicates it removes a liability from them. If you had N days per year, and had not used them and the resigned they need to pay you. With unlimited, there is no payment liability.

Further if you role turkey meant you could take “unlimited” you probably do not have a sustainable role.

I would take vacation as it is important be away and recharge but …. No more than two weeks at a time and not during key periods.

Work hard. Take the PTO. Don't feel bad about it. It's what it is there for. Minimal is 2 weeks. Allot yourself 30 days over the course of year. 4 weeks is what Europeans get. Again dont feel bad about it. Doesn't cost the employer anything.

This isn’t Europe…

Force them to define what that looks like.

I just started a new job 2 months ago, benefits and PTO don’t start until 90 days in so I still have a month before I can take off any time, and today found out my company doesn’t offer paid maternity leave.
I’m really struggling handling the symptoms and maintaining my full time job. Thinking about looking for a part time job to have more time to myself through the pregnancy since I won’t be getting a paid leave anyways, but lost on where to start looking. Any recommendations?

So, how many days left before you start the holiday seasons? What are your biggest priorities for the new year?

What length of vacation do you usually take? I’m a big fan of taking many 4 day weekends (instead of 1 or 2 longer vacays) but apparently those aren’t encouraged in the Big Law world?

How long is too long to try to push back a start date? Getting a formal offer early next week but trying to keep that big law bonus if possible. Firm pays out bonuses Dec 30 & I have a vacation scheduled Dec 19-23 (and was planning on working remotely the week after too). Ideally want to get EOY bonus or negotiate for a signing bonus but is it too much to push for signing bonus and those weeks off? I'm open to working remotely those two weeks but know that may not be the best when I start.

I’m a new associate to a T&E group, partner goes away on vacation and leaves me with a 706 to review and sign. The family is very wealthy. Decedent married for 60 years. Partner says it’s “just a DSUE election, decedent was ill for years, no assets.” Provides no records. Not even an admission the decedent owned a toothbrush. So I looked up the decedent’s home - it’s a joint asset. Partner was “surprised”, and still insists “no other assets”. I found file references to art and antiques.

Have an interesting scenario. Holiday party season is approaching. At one of our parties (during working hours) there is an optional “talent show.” Employees can win door prizes. We have an entry that is a religious song - like one you would sing in church. I assume we need to let this employee perform this - or we are setting ourselves up for trouble. Likewise, if we permit this song, I assume we cannot compel attendance to the talent show. The talent show is part of a lunch thing.

I’m in a little of a pickle but a good one. Offer A. Established “start up” doing well financially and projected to hit profitability. 130k base. Stocks offered, unlimited PTO, and 70% Medical covered. Offer B. Is at a business much larger…90k salary with 10% bonus and generous stock offering. Titles are different which is why the pay is much different. I know some may think it is a no brainer but offer A allows me to grow the department ground up whereas offer B id be apart of to just different

I accepted a new job, they said PTO was “generous.” I find out it’s 19 days a year of PTO (which includes sick days). I have two young children and we like to vacation 1-2x a year (no more than a few days away each time). Am I crazy that this is pretty limited time off? 8 of the normal holidays off during the year (working the week between Christmas and NYE). Thoughts? I dont know if lack of PTO is a good reason to back out, is it?
