new to investing. have done some research - reading blogs and a few books on investing. I still have the question of do individuals that take the index fund route… do you all purchase the same funds for different accounts? Example, would you invest in VTSAX across a brokerage and roth account, or would you take a different approach for each account?

Mutual funds in retirement accounts. ETFs in brokerage. I use the same index fund regardless, just different type (e.g. VTSAX vs VTI). It's all one big bucket to me. As long as I have the broad market index I'm good (and maybe some international exposure if you want that).

like

Yeah I don't see a need to be that complex. My index funds capture the entire US and international market. At some point I'll add bonds but not at my current age.

If you really don't want to deal with rebalancing, you could just use a target date fund. But I just plan to rebalance every few years which I don't mind doing.

like

I buy different ones primarily so I don't have to worry about wash sales, specifically if I sell for a loss in my taxable account I don't want a purchase in my Roth account to cause me to permanently lose the tax benefit of that loss.

like

Great point!

I'm in the same funds across different accounts because I crafted my portfolio to simplify and diversify in a way that let's me rebalance across a variety of sectors, market caps and growth vs value w low cost ETFs.

Going forward I'll rebalance less frequently and all rebalances should go in same direction so I don't expect a wash sale issue (though I like the point above).

Does anyone know what’s going on with my philodendron? I’ve had this plant for years and just recently got it to start producing new leaves again and all the new ones have these lighter spots, but all the old growth is just a solid dark green like the leaf in the background. Good thing, bad thing, or just a thing that happens? Anyone have some insight?

it feels like every survey about working from home is (poorly) designed to answer the useless question "would you rather work from home or from the office." I submit that the set of people who prefers to have only one of those two options, always and forever, is the null set. which means it DOES NOT MATTER because the correct answer is always going to be "make both possible." you're welcome, HR departments everywhere.
