Our firm requires us to be 3x/week in the office, but it hasn’t been enforced so far. Today I overheard a partner at his phone going on about how associate X has been MIA for 3 weeks, that associates shouldn’t need a nanny to comply with policy, and that if they need to let someone go X would be 1st in line. Is this a trend?

Nah, the partner is clearly just unhappy with associate X and looking for an excuse. If it wasn't wfh, it'd just be something else amorphous. The firm will always cater to attorneys who are top performers.

I haven’t been showing up but I’m not the first in line to get fired either.

likesmart

I think we all know some attorneys who really are MIA when working from home, so maybe that is the issue? And I want to be clear that I think those attorneys are in the minority— I find I am more productive wfh.

like

Yeah by MIA I mean not responding to emails, not getting the work done generally.

ew. where is this

like

I mean, I’m all for not enforcing this policy since I can come and go as I please, but is simply not coming in fair with the rest of us? I think if there’s even a hint of a layoff we’ll kiss WFH bye-bye

like

How is other people coming into the office fewer than three days a week unfair to you? Just do what you feel comfortable with and let others do the same.

like

If a firm has to layoff associates, those never/rarely in the office will be at heightened risk because it takes less of an emotional toll to layoff a person you rarely see. It doesn’t mean that the remote associates will always get fired, but rather human nature in these situations is to look for the easiest emotional path.

Secondly, when my team members see me in cafeteria we expect they'll sit with us but people here are being rude they directly go and sit with their friends they don't call you to join. ( atleast they could have said they are accompanied)

DE&I is now a core leadership competency. If you are managing diverse talent, it’s important to understand what the term “privilege” means within a DE&I context so you can lead your team to higher levels of inclusivity+develop optimal strategies for solutioning around team issues/challenges. Everyone has some aspect of privilege depending upon the context. Privilege means the absence of obstacles/barriers, not necessarily the presence of perks. Though some would say *that* itself is a perk.

How do I know Big-Law is not for me?

I am a first year who just started a couple of months ago and I am literally confused all the time. I did some small work for two partners and they loved it, so put me on new deals but the mid levels I am staffed with absolutely hate the work I do. One said the work I did was laughable. I felt bed because I spent over 25 hours on this. I wouldn’t be very bothered but the other Associates in my class are killing it. So I just feel dumb all the time.

Are there any books or other resources that mid levels/seniors/counsel/partners on here have found helpful for the project management / managing junior attorney aspects of your job?

Senior attorneys at v100, how common is it for attorneys who start at small firms to lateral to biglaw? Have you worked with any? Conventional wisdom is always that if you don’t start there it’s hard to “trade up”. My coworker and I just did it to two different great v30 firms, and I’m wondering if it’s really that uncommon? Just out of curiosity. We’re not special counsel with special niche skills or anything, just associates. Pitfalls to beware? Positives?

I’m a 9th year in a mostly litigation-based practice group at a one-tier partnership firm. My group’s billable hours have been low the last few years, so making partner will be nearly impossible, and a counsel position is not viable long-term in my group. What’s the best option here if partnership is the ultimate goal? Try to get a NEP/counsel position at another firm, which is likely difficult in my market, or offer to take a class cut by a few years?

I’ll go first: MP told me that on initial emails, I am always to start with “Hello [name],” but after the initial email, I am not to address her by name again in the same thread. Initial greeting can only be “Hello [name] ” because just first name is too brisk and a “Hi [name]” is too informal. Had a 5 minute, in depth conversation as to why she prefers it this way…

My firm’s IT (especially system saving and file locating function) is so bad 😐😞 and they keep doing updates no one asked them for just to mess with the stuff we already got a hang of without doing anything about the issues we actually need fixed. Anyone else in a similar boat? Do you bill the client for the time it takes to fix the IT issue (or IT inefficiency generally, like time taken to find a file in a convoluted system)? Or is that supposed to be our non-billable time?
