RTO is coming, and my team is not happy. We’ve been fully remote and crushing it, but now corporate wants butts back in seats. This is while all the execs get to remain comfy at home. I know the pushback is coming, and honestly, I kind of agree with them. How do you enforce a policy you personally don’t believe in?

SD1 nailed it. This isn’t the time to share your opinion, because it won’t help the situation. Stick to facts and provide an empathetic ear.

My other note on this - know that when you tell folks about the impending change you’ll get an eruption of emotional responses. That’s natural. I recommend giving your team a window of time (no more than a few days) to complain/grouse/vent about the new policy, then after that time start turning the conversation to looking for constructive suggestions to make the new policy more palatable for the team.

Remind them that the RTO policy is set above your pay grade but that finding creative ways to adapt is not, and provide a few sample suggestions you’d be ok doing for your team. Then listen with empathy, and do your best to incorporate a few of the suggestions into the way your team works moving into the future.

Explain leadership's reasoning for the change without offering your own opinion. It is hard to hold a team to a policy they know you don't believe in, but that will be your responsibility, so don't make it worse. Listen and if you can address certain concerns, try your best to do it. Give feedback to the people directly above you if your team hates it but that's about all you can do without undermining your own responsibility.

If it's your job to enforce it, you just enforce it. There doesn't seem to be any way to cut corners, a person is either in the building or they are not. I can't imagine you'd want to be in the position of lying about someone's whereabouts. This contagion of RTO mandates was probably always inevitable. People may complain about it, but the only recourse seems to be to leave. And with more and more companies doing the same thing, there wouldn't be that many places to flee to.

Here for the answers because I’m in the exact same boat. 🫠

This is probably not what the company would advise, but I would just level with them: I agree with you this isn't great, but we still have to do it, so let's work together to get the maximum benefit and minimum pain out of it. What would make this work better for you? And then advocate up the chain for whatever that is. Even if you don't get it, them knowing you tried will help.

Your mind is like your news feed.

Negative self talk will produce more negative self talk.

You can retrain your brain to ignore negative thoughts and “Like” positive thoughts that help you. When you do, possibilities and productivity increase.

It takes time to change thought patterns.

"Everybody can be a leader" some say... "Leaders are nurtured not born" say others... True.

But... this is also true: "not everybody wants to be a leader" (whether they can or can't be). It is a fairly common practice in organizations with traditional career management structures for people to "be promoted" into leadership roles as the "end steps of the corporate ladder" that was climbed doing technical work. And, unfortunately, this doesn't work all the time

Our annual reviews are approaching & one of my direct reports has been with us for almost six years w/ little growth. My reco was to let him go & find a stronger, hungrier & more motivated designer at the same level. However, my boss instead wants us to promote him in hopes that will spark some motivation. I am not behind this decision & have voiced my multitude of concerns in promoting an employee who doesn't deserve it. HR is behind the decision! Thoughts on promoting an undeserving report?

So my team currently uses onenote to house all of our SOPs and reference guides, but it’s becoming a monstrosity and it’s really hard to search and navigate. What programs do you use to provide your team with resources? Or is there some trick to onenote organization that we are missing maybe?
