Should I be ashamed for not having moved out yet at 25 years old?

likefunnyhelpful

AD3, where were your parents though? I couldn’t move back because it’s all small market agencies

I’m 30 and moving back home. While it’s a separate house — grandparents old house — I’m on the same property with my family. It’s easier, cheaper, and smarter than signing onto a lease or buying a home for me at this point. Plus it will give you greater flexibility should something drastic change in your professional or personal life. If you can work remotely, hedge your bets and...

IF YOU READ NOTHING ELSE, READ THIS:

Try to enjoy your time with your parents. They will be gone before you know it. So do some of your favorite shared activities together, don’t sweat when they treat you like their child — you are, and smile. Your time spent there can be a huge blessing — if you let it.

31 with kids and a wife here. Moved in with my parents this month.

We rented out our house but as Corona flared up again the last month or so we decided not to proceed with our next hosting option until things settle. We also didn't want to reneg on our tenants.

So, we're going to enjoy the Grandma/ Grandpa time and I'll try not to get too annoyed by the little things. Also, my wife is a saint.

I’m 21 (22 tomorrow) and I lived with my parents all through college and am still with them. There’s no shame in living with your parents, especially now. If it saves you money and makes you feel less anxious, that’s all that matters.

Happy Birthday D9!

There is absolutely no shame and you are not alone. But make sure your parents are really OK with the idea.

Living at home is amazing. I wish I wouldn’t have moved out.

No way! I’m moving back in with my family next month. Nows the time to be close to friends and family. My closest friend lives 5 hours away (I moved at the beginning of quarantine) so I miss them. We have to throw “social norms” out the window as we are literally in the midst of a pandemic.

You're all good! I just turned 25 and never moved out.

It’s all fun and games until the parents retire, sell the house, and move to a one bedroom condo at the beach.

I’m 30 and doing it. I welcome it - I’ll be saving thousands in rent for a few months. This will help Me with a down payment if the world still exists in 2021

My lease was up so I went home recently (I’m also 25), and it was GREAT for my mental health. I didn’t realize how stressed I was about not being with my family/doing what I could to keep them safe. But I get feeling weird about it, which I combat by actively trying to contribute to our day-to-day life in the household—making dinner, doing my whole fam’s laundry, buying groceries for the week, etc.

No. You should feel grateful that you can.

This is a silly post. Who cares what other people think. Do what’s best for you.

Do what’s best for you! This is a personal choice, and anyone passing negative judgement has nothing to do with you and everything to do with them.

No. I lived at home until I was 30 and once I finished my clerkship and transitioned into big law, I bounced! I have friends over 30 working in big law right now who are living at home with parents or relatives. Don't feel bad about it. It's becoming pretty common these days to stack your money up while paying off student loans and living in your parents house.

No Shame!!! Smart move. Save your money and show your parents your appreciation every day!!

Not at all! Mental health is real and it’s part of taking care of yourself

To echo some others on the chain - no one can tell you or decide for you. Everyone has a different relationship with money, their parents - and how that all plays out with sense of independence.

My siblings (stints before and during Covid) lived at home for transitional stretches. They saved a ton and everyone had a good time.

Talk to a therapist to discover your own feelings and if it’s not a toxic or unhealthy situation - and it makes sense for you and your (mental and financial) wellbeing - then that’s your choice.

I cared way too much about what others thought at 25.

In ten years you might be glad you saved for that down payment. No one knows what’s going to happen but having cash means having options.

You’ll figure it out. No shame in exploring options and making informed decisions.

If anyone mocks you then reconsider why you value their input.

Who cares what other people think? If it’s the right move for you, no one else’s opinion matters.

True. Is up to the parents acceptance which is most important. as a parent with grown children I need to hear their plan before my kids come home. I paid my dues raising them and always willing to help but I’m nearing retirement so need much consideration on my budget as well.

You’ve asked yourself, your friends and a bunch of strangers. Ask your parents. Really ask your parents. Your housing optionality was not part of their life plan, let them live their life.

like

I WISH I could do the same. I'm 25 and moving out now because of how emotionally abusive my home is. I really wish I could save my money (which isn't much to begin with) and stay at home, so I'm jealous.

like

Don’t feel bad. Covid or not, these are personal circumstances and decisions that are yours to make. No one should shame you - and you should remove it from your vocabulary.

Heck, I’m 40 and would love to move back with my folks — would love them to spend more time with their granddaughter and I’ve grown to appreciate their wisdom.

Not everyone is a good listener.

Most people have a habit of listening to find a way to relate your story to their lives and then tell you how it relates.

A small percentage of people will listen to you, show empathy, find ways to help you, cheer you on, and overall, keep the focus on you and your needs.

Next time you have a conversation, find out who's really listening to you.

If you go for interview and you sort of know that the person interviewing you might be curious about something on your negative on your resume like why is there a gap or why were you in XX role for so long?

Do you address it pre-emptively? Or does that show insecurity and you leave the elephant in the room and wait till they ask you?

I guess this is more in the case of networking than interview like do you make your own story?
