You can’t enroll in an HSA if you don’t have a high deductible plan. OP, I was in the same position as you with an amazing health plan from my parents that I stayed on until 26. I recently had to switch off and now have been able to set up an HSA. It’s nice to have the tax advantage account but having all health expenses covered was amazing. Stay on your parent’s as long as you can!!

It should be really easy to set up when the time comes. If you select a high deductible plan you will likely be autoenrolled and your employer will contribute some on your behalf and will take payroll deductions for the rest. Benefit of going though your employer is money is taken out pre-FICA. If you contribute on your own, it’s pretax but not pre-FICA.

Is it a high deductible plan?

If you’re not on a high deductible plan, you’re ineligible. I also think you’re ineligible to remain 24 forever, but you may want to double check that one.

You can set up an HSA with Fidelity and contribute the max. You may be missing out on some free money from your company though but depending on the amount the company contributes then it may not make sense for you to start paying for your insurance yourself to get their contribution.

Correct, a lot of misinformation including the fish above saying they have a HSA without a high deductible plan

I don’t think you can. One of the requirements is to have a high deductible health plan

What would you do if you were me? Late 30s. Burned out. 1.4M invested in index funds (75% in in post tax accounts). 4k/month fixed housing expense. Untilites/insurance/subscriptions at 1k/month. After that it's food, clothing, and one-off expenses. Dual income family of 4. Monthly burn rate gets up to 9k when we're not paying attention so I'm not traditional FIRE yet. Coasting options? Sabbatical? A few more years in the salt mines? Rental properties or other time suck investments?

I know it’s all been said before. I would’ve never expected to be in this kind of situation or that it’d go on for so long. Others have lost far more than I have due to COVID. I’m grateful for my health. But I still feel an insurmountable sense of loss from everything that’s happened. A professional opportunity I worked for years to achieve had finally materialized and then disappeared just as quickly. I feel isolated and hopeless, just trying to survive and one day see an end to the madness.

Non-accounting rant…Our lease is up at the end of April and we recently got our new lease contract. All of a sudden, the leasing company is requiring renter’s insurance. It’s apparently a new requirement for all new and current residents. It’s definitely a good thing to have, but isn’t there some sort of requirement for landlords to communicate big changes to leases in advance and not just stick it on the lease and hope everyone reads it? It seems kinda predatory and sneaky.

I want to FIRE. IRA and 401k are beyond my definition of the ‘RE’ idea since they can only be withdrawn without penalty at 55. Is the only other way to save for retiring at 40-55 an individual brokerage account and just accept the tax upon withdrawal?

Hello! Seeking advice regarding our mortgage company not complying with our FHA Loan Closing Disclosure.Per FHA requirements, homeowners insurance has to be collected through escrow. However they've only been paying property taxes. This extra money that accumulated in escrow won't cover what's owed to insurance because property taxes and insurance went up. Thus leaving us with a large chunk of change that we will have to front. Had this been done correctly in the first place, we wouldn't have cared about up
