Thoughts on switching from Deloitte federal to Booz? Project opportunities/culture? If you’re a second yr consultant at D, what level should you expect at Booz with a masters and 5 years experience?

I love the enthusiasm. I even wish I could bottle it up and drink it. Call me cynical, but your odds of hitting the $2k award ceiling or getting that paid trip are about as good as you hitting the power ball. Not to mention you make the progression to Senior Associate sound so easy. I’m not sure how many years you’ve been grinding, but I’ve been at it long enough to realize most people will never sniff SA or the bonus pool. Our lack of an up or out culture allows bonus pool eligible employees to get complacent, fat, and happy. They have no incentive to leave, and until they do, no one under them can get promoted.

Second year consultant at Deloitte is definitely equivalent to senior consultant at Booz, not associate. But you could probably convince them to being you in as an associate, it would just be a promotion.

As for salary, Deloitte isn't necessarily better across the board. Plenty of teams at Booz pay relatively well, but lot's don't, which is where you get all of the disgruntled posters here. No real bonuses below senior associate though, which really does suck.

The variety of federal work is obviously much greater; Booz just has a much bigger federal footprint. Work life balance is also great and it's definitely worth pursuing if you're at a point in your life where you value that over faster salary growth.

The equivalent level there would be associate but would strongly discourage anyone from going there. Career progression opportunities there and upward mobility is extremely limited. They just have a very low growth rate compared to Deloitte and the people who advance are those who happen to be in the right market as they are a very siloed company with their internal organizational structure.

FWIW there are many ex-Deloitte people at Booz and they all seem to think that you’d be crazy for trying to jump ship to Deloitte. That’s a self-selective group obviously but all the ex-Deloitte folks I’ve talked to here have said they’re much happier at Booz.

Funny, I was going to post a similar question later today about switching from Booz to Deloitte Fed. Maybe the grass isn’t greener...

Booz has 8 levels: 1 consultant, 2 sr consultant, 3 associate, 4 lead associate, 5 sr associate (sr manager), 6 principle (director), 7 vp, svp (partner). It’s a great firm and opportunity has been endless for me. Not sure if D1 ever worked here, if they did then it makes sense because they got frustrated and left not understanding how the firm works if they didn’t then it makes sense because the statements are the furthest thing from the truth ie org structure. We change structures every 3-4 years keeping things fresh and moving sr leaders around the firm. The people who advance are those that kill it with clients, can grow a team/or capability, and have assisted in capture or proposals. It’s not rocket science we (fed consultants) all do the same thing. I have plenty of folks that came from Deloitte in the last 5 years that prefer the Booz culture. At the end of the day why not come see what you can learn from the Firm that started it all? 🤗

5 years and a masters sounds about average for newly promoted associates at Booz. If they see you are a current consultant at Deloitte they will probably try to to pull u in as a sr consultant in Booz. From a salary perspective sr consultant at Deloitte and 1st year associates at Booz are about equivalent. Booz has a lot more levels than Deloitte so it is hard to make a one for comparison.

Uh oh sounds like D1 got triggered - True facts regarding the business development contribution bonuses; but wrong re: performance bonuses - those are available to all and were recently augmented to be more accessible.

smartfunny

Interesting. I hear good things about Booz worklife, but it’s admittedly from people who have reached a comfortable level and value their free time. Which is fine. I think I’ll probably wind up at that point once I am done with progression.

Does Booz support internal geographic transfer? I want to head to CO after a few more years in DC.

$800? Value and purpose award that are staff nominated go up to $2,000. VIP award (free trip/vacation) is for Lead Associate and below only. I agree that staff bonus are lower compared to a private Deloitte or other Big 4 competition. If your only work incentive is a bonus and your not willing to grind until Sr associate then I guess the grass does look greener.

All in all, I’m guessing if i care about career profession and comp, BAH is not the way to go.

like

D1 an associate at Booz is equivalent to a consultant at D? What’s the equivalent level to SC, considering I’d be going up for promo this year

like

D1’s perspective hasn’t been my experience, but it’s fair to be ready for given the better wages at D. That said I hear a lot about the improved work/life balance at BAH - just be ready to have to push beyond the required to keep moving.

like

I’m surprised by the amount of satisfied BAH employees posting on this thread. Even I’m underwhelmed, and I’m generally viewed as someone who’s a success story (made LA in 4.5 years).

The bonuses we’re all eligible for pale in comparison to the bonuses given out to staff level employees at other firms. In 6 years w/ BAH, the largest non senior leader bonus I’ve heard of was $800. Bonuses for staff at other firms are measured in the thousands.

like

Don’t go to booz

like

It all depends on location and program. I enjoy BAH and the culture they promote. I’m content with my compensation package and really can’t see leaving any time before I meet some financial goals. Even then, I’ll seek to move within the firm when I’m ready to move on. I just don’t see anyone offering what I get now.

like

EY1, I happily accept lower pay for a life of my own and being home most of the time. Tons of money isn’t worth much to me if I don’t have a “home” to go home to.

like

I'm a pretty recent Associate and I honestly love it at Booz. I've been told I could make more at Deloitte, but it's not worth it to gamble. Also, I have a chronic illness (lots of doc appts), a kid with special needs (lots more appointments), and I feel like I have the flexibility I need to get stuff done for my life without too much extra stress around work.

And that's without disclosing either of those things to Leadership.

Do Leidos, SAIC, and other mostly-fed consulting businesses pay bonuses to all levels? If so, what does a typical bonus target look like? Booz Allen does not pay bonuses until you get to the Senior Associate level (1 step below Director) and I think that impacts employee performance and work ethic pretty dramatically. I’m wondering if not paying bonuses is common to federal contracting because of how the contracts or priced, or if this is something unique to Booz Allen.
