Imagine that you go to war or some battlefield for the first time without the certainty that you will return, it is something strong, now repeat that several times for several years.
Well when you're in a culture where being sad/depressed is a sign of weakness, you hide it and don't get help. Not to hate, I served and had a few of my joes that were going through a lot of personal issues and I knew they were depressed. Took it up with my SL and went up to my 1sgt. What was his idea? A 5 mile fun run lol.
The things that you experience in war follow you all your life and many times you bring those things to your home in one way or another, and both your wife or husband and your children or relatives, in general, feel that something affects you and that they cannot do anything to help you, that is something that depresses anyone.
Post-traumatic stress is basically contagious because when you suffer you can rarely tell someone and when you do, that person also feels bad for you.
Because we are no longer skilled professionals when we got out. I lead a unit, and I can't get a management job at a Dollar General. I find my identifying as a veteran is a detriment to finding a civilian career.
What they witness in war and what they have to do is so traumatic. Also, imagine not being with your significant other for so long. getting up and just moving your family so many times. The list goes on and on about what causes mental health issues in the military and their families.
Based on my experience, the main cause of depression is the involvement of security and safety of people. That's how I see it.
Because of the lack of certainty that they will be safe and able to return to their families. It's really heartbreaking. Well, it's part of our job.
