Any advice on managing your relationship with a parent that has ADHD? They got diagnosed a few years ago, and it’s been a great help, but now almost every single thing is related back to ADHD. I’m really glad that having a diagnosis provides clarity, but I guess now it feels like that’s where the progress stopped.

Does it seem like they are using it as more of an excuse now instead of working to help themselves? I have a friend recently diagnosed, and that seems to be the case for them.

That’s too bad. Hoping they come around to understand it’s a learning process instead of a diagnosis and done.

My parent’s issue is her emotional immaturity not her ADHD but once she was diagnosed it was a go to in any situation. Reading Adult Children of Emotionally Immature parents really helped.

Maybe have a discussion on what behaviors you're seeing, in case they're not aware? And then gentle reminders. My family reminds me about things I need to do or asks me if I still need something (as an example reminder that I left something out).

What traits are they exhibiting that are frustrating to you?

I just got a really great offer, only downside is the eligibility for maternity leave is after 12 months of employment. We got a faint positive today but have had so many chemical pregnancies over the past year that I am not confident it will stick this time BUT I am on aspirin and progesterone for this try … so it could.. I want to see if I could negotiate being eligible earlier but I also don’t want them to think I’m pregnant when I’m not actually… How would you approach the conversation?

Is anyone concerned the push for sexual equality in pay without accordant leveling of parental leave is gonna backfire?

Here’s a hypothetical:

A company has 2 candidates, aged 25-30, equal in every respect save one’s a man the other’s a woman. Maybe the woman is a slightly better candidate overall. They’d have equal comp.

Company considers the woman a riskier bet due to possibility she’ll take maternity leave — and considers the man less risky for his ineligibility to take as much leave. 🤷

Misled on Maternity Leave Policy. I found out I only get 4 weeks pay for maternity leave (STD +“sick days”). I will take 12 weeks but wont get paid for 8 weeks. I work for a US, west coast based company in the tech/VC industry. Their website claims to offer “paid parental leave and other progressive benefits for parents”. I didn’t find out until after I was hired their pay was only 8 weeks but since I have been at the company less than 12 months, I don’t qualify for their policy. Is this unfair?

How do firms calculate how much parental leave to provide, either paid or unpaid. Or do they just pick a number, like “yeah they can get to know their kid in a few weeks and I couldn’t possibly have that attorney out for 12 weeks?” I’m at a small firm, no FMLA or state requirement. We get four weeks paid and four weeks unpaid. Would like to push for more but not sure how to argue costs side of it.
