I actually moved here from your neck of the woods (Killeen when I left the army, so not quite as nice lol). The biggest positive is how much cheaper it is to live here than Austin. Yes you donât pay income tax where you are at, but real estate taxes are about half of yours. The Grove is probably the closest feeling area to Rainey or 6th street if thatâs your scene. The biggest plus is the commute time if youâre looking at the suburbs compared to what it would be like in Round Rock. The downside is the younger crowds arenât as young as Austin is (there is a reason your city is always ranked towards the top of best places for young adults to live). I think the bad rep STL gets for crime is overstated so long as you arenât venturing to the northern area of the city, but Iâm also biased living here.
Lol true but why would anyone go to IL other than to visit a dispensary?
Housing market is booming there! Lots going for over asking price from a friend who is a real estate agent there. You can get some pretty neat historical feeling houses in the Soulard/lafeyette square area. Kirkwood, Brentwood, Clayton are all other great places to look for housing as well.
I grew up there and loved the Midwest/feel. A lot of dry sense of humors youâll find and all around good people. I live in Texas now and debate moving back to stl often.
Iâd suggest thinking about how you spend your time and what you value, and see how the city does in those areas. I grew up there and moved away; itâs not some place I ever think I would move back to. (I like hiking in the mountains on the weekends, and itâs in the plains. I donât like watching sports, and that seems to be all that anyone talks about at work. I like fresh seafood, and well... yeah. I like to drive a few hours for a weekend trip, but within a short distance, your options are limited.) There are definitely upsides (great free activities for kids, Midwestern values, low cost of living), but make sure it matches what you value.
Congrats on the offer! I lived there for about 6 years and my wife would love to move back at some point (she really liked STL). Feel free to message me
You will be so sad moving from Austin to StL.

STL is fine but I do think it could be a relatively safe area to raise a family considering COL is lower and museums and some entertainment is free-ish. It is a pretty sleepy town and mostly exclusively on weekends. I found it pretty easy and fast to get around.
I lived there.. It is pretty boring and desolete unless you have friends/family there. Iâd recommend spending a weekend and the deciding if thatâs worth it
If you like art (besides the museums) even if you are not Catholic or Christian visit the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis (ânew Cathedralâ) on Lindell Blvd in the Central West End. The tile mosaics are breathtaking.

Itâs not Austin, itâs just plain not as a cool of a city. The weather will be a real shock as well, that Midwest sleet is hellish. That said, the COL is extremely low, your money will go far. Also you can fly nonstop to a lot of places from STL.
Try Imos pizza, thatâll make it or break it for you.
Okay, SA1, just for you Iâll try it. Haha.
I came here for 2-4 years and have been here for 23. Public schools in West St. Louis county are very good. Hospitals are very good. Depending on the role for which you are vying I have a couple of friends at Centene who can address their incredibly rapid expansion & any potentially associated growing pains etc. let me know 1:1 if I can help. Thanks
