For veteran parents - are you at all hesitant about encouraging your children to join the military if they express interest?

If they express interest, I'll answer questions and be a resource in helping them make their own best decision.

With prior active duty time (that includes combat deployments), and still being in as a reservist, it's almost guaranteed that questions will come up.

I see my role as helping provide insights where they have curiosity, not pushing them in a direction I want them to go.

My kid was born after I was out, so she doesn’t know of my military experience outside of what I tell her. Part of me thinks “I joined so you wouldn’t have to.” My working class single parent house didn’t have the financial support for college, and I’ll be able to use leftover state level veterans benefits for her college tuition. That said, if my kid really wanted to join I’d steer to coast guard or Air Force. I’d be a bit upset if one of the others were chosen despite many in the family serving in them. Me and my kid aren’t the same person and I’d rather my kid forge a unique path.

Up to them but wouldn’t encourage it. They’ll do what they want anyways but hope to enable them to realize the benefits of opportunities in the civilian sector.

I’ve always encouraged my girls to consider a military career. But they are not interested because they all have anxiety. They were stressed out at school from gun drills and false alarms. Then add in more stress from social media.

My father was a marine brother marine uncle navy. My ROTC. It’s personal pray and walk by faith not by sight! 😉

Absolutely not. My time in the Navy had a huge impact on the person I am today. My wife and I met during one of our many classes we had to take as part of our rating and have been married now for over 22 years. I learned discipline, critical thinking, how to take direction and how to give it, along with tons of technical training that led to a great career after returning to the civilian world. My wife and I encourage each of our 4 boys to consider the military as one of many choices along with direct to college and trades. In the end the Navy provided the bases for my technical knowledge that got me into my career and then paid for the degree that got me into a leadership role at that same company.

I remember having an argument about my daughter, possibly being interested in going into the military with my ex-husband. He ended up being a 20 year Air Force veteran and the son of a 20 year army veteran. I am the daughter of an over 20 year army veteran. And when I asked him what are you going to do if she wants to go into the military? His answer was “nothing, it’s a noble career.” Stopped me dead in my tracks, couldn’t say another word.
She ended up going a different route, but she still serves the military today and she’s very proud of her military heritage on both sides of her family. I wouldn’t change a thing about that.
Partner 1, I’m in complete agreement. Civilians have no idea what the life is about at all, they think all our bills are paid while serving, think everything’s free, they have no idea what kind of sacrifice it takes in order to live a military life or be the family member of a military person.

My daughter knew of my MST. She still took interest but ultimately went with a full scholarship to UCONN. The AF and Navy recruiters were slightly rude at the initial meeting.

I made sure she knew the possibilities and she is far more aware of her surroundings than your average teen. I believe if you set them up with realities they do better. My military experience could easily have been a college situation. Better to know the truth upon arrival.

Not at all. My daughter went in the Marines.

Happy wife happy life is a really toxic saying. I’m just shocked how this has become the standard saying for men in relationships. I have friends of mine saying this all the time, and I have just thought it’s so cringe and always want to say my thoughts on it but always decide to hold back. However, imagine the saying reversed - happy husband happy life - that would lead to all kinds of uproar. To me happy wife happy life means I need to sacrifice my wants and needs to make my wife happy.

People that have small children - how do you deal with your child’s stress and separation anxiety when you go to work? My 4-year old goes berserk almost every day at some point relating to me having to work. The worst part is that I’ve been working from home bc of Covid and I’m literally just walking upstairs after giving hugs and kisses and saying see you soon 800 times. My spouse is a stay at home parent, but that doesn’t seem to matter to my son. A piece of me dies everyday because of this.

I have a friend who told me he sought treatment for alcohol abuse 6 mo ago. We talk a lot and I try not to judge or ask too many questions about his progress, just wanting to be a supportive friend who doesn’t pressure him. Should I have confronted and stopped him? Should I bring it up now? Guilty now
