Unfortunately, not every diner is nice to their waiter. Some are… and some are like you just described. They figure since they are paying for it, they can act like that.
It’s rare that clients are super gracious, appreciative and complimentary. More often they (IME) feel entitled to receive work that goes above and beyond, are nothing but critical (even if they do buy something) and can lack “bedside manners” for lack of a better term. This kind of stuff is what causes so many creatives to become jaded over the years.
Bedside manners is a great term i’m stealing. Do you think clients are miserable people? I wouldn’t say i’m the warmest person but the thought of not being kind to others grosses me out.
I work with extremely lovely clients who have reasonable expectations and deliver feedback kindly. We’ve worked together for over half a decade at this point, and I can count on one hand the number of true blue compliments I’ve gotten from them towards the team, myself, or otherwise.
Take the new work as a compliment, and celebrate internally. It’s business, not personal.
I feel you, but in reality you’re just doing the job they expect you to do.
