I like to crack a few jokes and generally let my personality through. It's not that clinical, sterile vibe I've seen some agencies try to affect, but honestly I think they do it as cover for something. I've always found clients want to enjoy the relationship, not talk at a room doing their best hostile lawyer impression.
I’ve been playing music as everyone joins the meeting. I try to choose a song that I have a connection to. It takes that initial zoom awkwardness out of the beginning of the meeting and makes people smile. Instant rapport!

Love this question/ very timely/thanks for asking. I act very much like I would in face to face. Engage folks as they come into the zoom with small talk as I would if we were
Meeting in a room. I typically start worh introductions when meeting kicks off. But in that intro part I try and build some rapport/ asking about the background they use etc. but nothing forced. I am not a fan of the canned stuff like “ if alone on an island what album would you bring”. Just try and be a person connecting with them. Zoom seems more intimate than in person. Less formal. Which can be great.
I haven’t really had trouble establishing rapport with prospects over Zoom - in fact, I think it’s been perhaps more genuine and natural feeling than in-person pitches and meetings I’ve been in in the past (and I’ve been in a lot!). I think partially because now we all have this common ground and level playing field of WFH during the pandemic. Everyone I’ve talked to has been very kind, open and generally very understanding of technical issues, kid interruptions, etc. We’re on a win streak right now - so fingers crossed that remote pitching continues to go well for the rest of the year!
