Do not pay any company who offers to help you get a board seat. This is a complete scam. I have been an executive career coach for nearly 2 decades and I can assure you that no recruiting company has any influence on helping you get a board seat. I coach clients who are board members of companies on the New York stock exchange and London Stock exchange. Some of them sit on the board for multiple companies. I have been through the process several times. Being offered a board seat comes through networking and reputation. You need a provable track record of accomplishments and must be a subject expert for the committee that you sit on. You must also be well-connected as you will be recommended by someone who is involved in the company or is in a position of influence for company. Your reputation is everything. Your character and ethical background will reflect on the company whose board you will sit on. Being appointed to a board seat is a slow process with lots of interviews and vetting within the process. The cream rises to the top for a reason... Good Luck!
I've shared this here before and do so again with honest intent to help, not to condescend: at a Director level, you are probably too junior for a corporate board seat. Age is obviously correlated but not the driving factor. Your best bet is to keep networking (better than recruiters) and cut your teeth on non-profit boards. You may be able to leverage your industry experience at a startup, but truthfully they tend not to appoint independents, so will be tough if you're not investing. Happy to talk further if you'd like.
