I’m 35 and with the constant talk of there being an imminent recession in 2019/20 I’m thinking of reallocating my 401k to a more conservative portfolio a 60% stocks / 40% bonds? Is anyone doing this?

Unless you're planning on retiring in the next 5 years, ride it out. The market always recovers, and your 55+ y/o self will thank you for not trying to time buying back into the stocks.

I just don’t see the market ripping like crazy in the near future so not sure I’ll be losing out on much equity market returns

I'm doing this (taking a defensive investing position).

I've rebalanced from 95% equities back in Jan to only about 40% equities now, shifting a chunk out of equities every 2-3 months. I'm about 5% up for the year as opposed to the 0-1% gain YTD on most indexes currently and the slight paper loss some people are seeing.

Agree with you that the market probably has low odds of going up further. But we could both very well be wrong so need to keep some equity to participate in potential upside. I'm comfortable with 30-40% equities in today's environment and sleep better with that mix.

I'm still putting money into the market with every paycheck but allocating towards treasuries instead of equities.

Howard Marks of Oaktree wrote a great book on this topic called "Mastering the Market Cycle". I'm halfway through and highly recommend.

Well the bust is going to be in debt market which is like 7 times the size of equity market

Hey 🐠,

I am approaching the Roth IRA income limit, and have a pre-existing Roth IRA that was not converted from a traditional account. Is there a way for me to take advantage of the backdoor Roth loophole while funneling the money into my current Roth? Or, do I have to set up a new account, convert it to Roth, and make all future contributions into that account? I’ve already asked my broker, and they have not been the least bit helpful. Thanks!

People living in LCOL areas who bought a house in the last few years... What did you spend on your home, what are the bed/bath #s, and did you buy a fixer upper, turnkey home, or something in between?

Starting to home shop in a LCOL city and I'm super curious to see some numbers from others in similar types of locations. I'm originally from a bigger HCOL city so what feels "reasonable" to me is skewed, but everyone here seems to want to spend as little as possible on homes.

Is anyone concerned the push for sexual equality in pay without accordant leveling of parental leave is gonna backfire?

Here’s a hypothetical:

A company has 2 candidates, aged 25-30, equal in every respect save one’s a man the other’s a woman. Maybe the woman is a slightly better candidate overall. They’d have equal comp.

Company considers the woman a riskier bet due to possibility she’ll take maternity leave — and considers the man less risky for his ineligibility to take as much leave. 🤷

How much did you save before leaving your parent’s house? Either for the first time, or if you went back during early Covid.

$530k HHI, $250k cash on hand, $1.2M investments/retirement. Plan to buy $800-900k house as our first home, but thinking of the best approach given rates today. My thinking is that we (i) put $200k+ down and get a 5/1 ARM. (ii) put everything we save moving forward toward paying down the principal (after maximizing retirement accounts). Should be able to do $100k per year. (iii) If rates go down below 4.5ish % for 15 year fixed, refinance and stop aggressive payment. Thoughts on this approach?
