Your political beliefs are like your furniture. Keep them at home.
The problem isn't really politics, it's what passes for politics these days. People are mostly just engaging in dumb taunting and insults and spreading disinformation they picked up on social media. I'll always try to discourage it as it's disruptive. And to be honest, when I see people repeating things which are demonstrably untrue, I can't help but think a lot less of them. Society was better off when people read newspapers and books and not Facebook and X.
I for one, love to debate..... politics or anything for that matter. But the work place needs to be kept professional. Our personal/private lives and opinions on such subjects need to be left out of that professional environment. It's never going to go back to the same professional environment once we all start sharing our opinions on private/controversial matters. I don't want to start seeing my peers as anything other than what they have to contribute to the work environment. Once I start seeing them as the opponents in my personal life, it's no longer an objective, professional or productive environment.
The more political discourse is buried and people only interact in echo chambers the more polarised and extremist societies become.
Politics is never the issue. Immaturity is the issue.
People should be able to civilly exchange opinions and be open to listen and change their minds. When they're not, that's just childish.
That's the issue.
Use inability to properly discuss politics in the workplace as red flags for unstable behaviour.
This whole post is a red flag. The workplace is not the place to be disgusting politics. If people are not mature enough to talk politics, it’s not the duty of the workplace to educate them. You’re just fanning the flames. I would not encourage political discussion at all.
