What do you think are the pros and cons of being a Partner in Tier 1/Tier2 consulting firms vs a high position in Big Tech vs being an entrepreneur ?

It’s all about risk vs reward. Partner is the lowest risk, but the upside is limited. Entrepreneur is very high upside, but high risk. Big tech is in the middle, as comp heavily depends on stock price movement.

Good summary. Also, advising vs. owning

like

Depending on the big tech organization (>$1B+ revenue) and which function, that will probably be the hardest path if you want to earn the same salary as you would a consulting partner on the business side of tech. I would guess it’s a bit more competitive to get there, because it will offer a better lifestyle and you have to have a relevant track record of successful ownership (held accountable for outcomes). You may have more levels to climb and be competing with people from consulting and other tech companies if your trying to pivot as a consultant.

I recently had an initial interview for a technical recruiter position. The guy on the phone stated that this is not a 9-5 job and long hours are expected. I proceed to ask how much PTO is offered and he said that is not recommend within the first 6 months of working and the harder you work the more PTO you receive. From that conversation, I saw instant red flags. Any thoughts?

I’m currently interviewing with a few top 10 firms and a couple top 100 firms for a mostly remote experienced associate/new senior role. Does anyone have any tips on virtual interviews and how to gauge the culture of the firm and if it really will be a good fit for you? I’m struggling to figure out that out because I used to gauge it on the feeling I got while in their office during interviews. Any suggestions would be helpful :)

One of the reasons I want to transition from industry to consulting (tier 1) is that I get frustrated when I have to collaborate with mediocre people. My assumption is that Tier 1 consulting firms hire really sharp people and if I can get in, I’ll be collaborating with folks on top of their game (not expecting much from clients). I’m aware there are personal aspects I need to work on like my mindset, patience etc etc, but I just get so frustrated with blatant stupidity.

I don’t know who needs to hear this (mostly As, Cs, SCs, and some Ms) but here goes.

You are important to the project, but never so important that you cannot leave the project or firm for better opportunities. Being in hero mode is good where you save the day, everyday - but in fact that is neither advisable for your progression nor a recommended practice for the firm. If you have been performing and have had decent social skills, you will not have burnt a bridge when you leave.
