This sounds like better training than any other training I’ve heard. Can you bill the time in some way, even if not to a client?
A1 I knew you were, my response wasnt directed at you. OP said “it could be billable if we prepped for my actual motions. Not random ones” and I inferred that they were suggesting getting “credit” by billing to an active client because the motion is something actually happening on that case.
Don’t think training flies as a client billable task.
This sounds awful. I would hate this.

No

I’d love this. Billable hours with very little outside exposure if I mess up
Mentor
it’s non-billable

I’ve been at a couple firms that do this style practical training but definitely not every week. Often it will be things like a mock trial, mock deposition, and other mock arguments. Usually these are NITA style programs, and they can take a couple days. It’s a good way for junior lawyers to develop a skill set in a lower stakes environment.
With fewer in court and trial opportunities, it’s probably good that a firm is looking to develop its lawyers’ skills. Training isn’t usually billable, it’s part of developing as a lawyer.
So glad I work at a lit boutique that has enough faith in its associates to give them actual motions to argue or depos to take instead of this mock stuff. It is a bit throwing right in, but with the right partner support is the best way to learn.

exactly. that’s why i think it’s patronizing. my old firm was toxic, but they trusted us enough to handle our own motions and depos.
We’re talking about practice
We’re not even talking about the game
Is this Schulte? I heard that they do that to summers.
I know you’re not a summer, sorry, I just have only heard of this once before

Have you told them you have a current motion / asked if you could argue that instead? Maybe they’d be willing to accommodate that. Probably still can’t bill it all though.

Also, see if this counts under your state’s self-study CLE hours.
Is this suits?
