Apple for AE roles and keep being successful as an SDR so you have metrics and experience to speak on
Im in the same boat. You should build a close relationship with your AE and shadow them. I would also talk to your AE’s manager and connect. If you’re not getting promoted because of budget freezes and no internal growth, apply for AE roles but just know applying externally for AE positions is going to be challenging since they usually want prior AE experience.
And the market is flooded with talented and experienced AE’s, so for the moment might be best to at least explore internal options
I would honestly start pressing them hard for your promotion. When is the last time you spoke to your manager about this, did you two develop a plan of action together, do you have metrics to back up your reasoning, have you watched the demo so many times you know it by heart? You don’t usually get what you want in this world unless you ask/make a plan to get it.
I know “apply to a new job” gets thrown out a lot but there are things you can do internally to keep your own morale up. Plus it will reset you “SDR clock”. The best AE’s I know, are crazy proactive and go getters, if you exemplify that you are too a go getter, this will boost you up in the eyes of leadership. Maybe other initiatives have taken more room on their plate, state your argument, ask for a high salary and get the job that belongs to you
Id recommend attempting to get promoted internally first. Ask your manager to provide you with concrete steps that you need to take to get promoted by X date; its a mutual action plan between you and management to help with accountability and follow through.
I feel like it’s easier to become a AE at your current job. Many companies want experienced AE when hiring from outside:
Work with your manager and make connections with other leaders you could support! Talk to them about what it takes to get onto their team. I have so many people on my team I want to promote but there’s no openings right now. I have to keep encouraging that they’ll get there, it’s just about availability. I talk to other managers and let them know I have internal candidates that I think would be good for their team and keep consistent communication on behalf of my employees.
Anybody here have a comp breakdown of what their SDR’s are making? Asking as Im trying to pivot to sales later in life (turn 36 this year) after years of working in CS and was hired as the first and only SDR at my company but the path to AE is ambiguous since it’s media buying and I’m accustomed to pure SAAS.
For me (more SaaS) $150-$200 paid per meeting seems to be the norm. Nicer jobs will pay you 1% of a closed deal, depending on the size of the deals
