How did everyone here get into sales? Would love to hear your stories!

I was getting out of the military, had no directly transferable work skills, and needed to make a living in an expensive city (San Diego). Started looking at my options and found that I could do menial labor for just above minimum wage OR I could learn to get people to buy things and make this wonderful thing called commission! Took a job in insurance sales and the rest is history! Been in sales for about 15 years now ❤️

The very first thing I ever sold, at the age 9, was horseshit. My Dad wanted me to use a wheelbarrow and spread a pile that had accumulated over the winter across the field. Instead, I went into the barn and got a piece of wood & some paint and made a sign that said - "Horse manure for sale". About a week later, a guy showed up with a truck, filled the back of it with manure and gave me $5.00. It wasn't enough to cover all the mushrooms he was growing, so he returned a week later and did the same. This time he brought a bottle of wine for my parents & another five bucks for me.

Fucked around in uni, didn't get good enough grades to do anything better so decided to climb the sales ladder instead as no real skills are needed.

Wow, but are we making 6 figures? Yes, yes we are. Do we go on incentive trips across the globe? Yes, yes we do. Can we pay our bills, own a home, have a family and send an ungrateful kids to Uni? We’ll see, by the looks of things perhaps I’ve just increased my portfolio instead.

I was having a hard time finding work after college. Took a part-time job as a server in a well-known bar in Seattle. Through my experience I was able to learn different kinds of alcohol and mixes, brands, company names and company employees. I became close with the people in the companies until I was offered a role as sales agent. I was young and very energetic, my knowledge of the beverage that I got from my server experience helped me a lot until I finally reached the position I am holding today.

uplifting

I was a graffitti writer as a kid, then got hired to paint signs.... i started selling custom painted signs. Now, I sell all types of signs and sign packages and programs. Yes, I'm well into the 6 figure salary

It was really my plan from the get-go. It took me 10 years to get where I am now. Everyone's stories are so fun to read.

I’m really struggling in my current role. I’m a contractor with a healthcare company. Next to no training and the training that was provided has been by a developer…who doesn’t get why I don’t know how to code. They are holding on converting me because of this. I’m just lost.

Does anyone go to a clinic several hours from their home? I did IVF in early 2020 that resulted in a successful fresh transfer. I have 7 embryos frozen at my fertility clinic, but we moved about 6 hours away. We are starting to talk about being ready to move forward with FET, but I don’t know if I should try to find a clinic to move the embryos to me or plan to travel so we don’t have to move the embryos.

Has anyone had a challenging time with scheduling an interview call for an AE role with Gartner? The first time, we scheduled for a day/time and confirmed. When that day/time came, they didn’t call so I messaged them to f/u. They apologized since it didn’t make it into their calendar and the spot was taken although I thought that spot was for me & I waited for the calendar invite despite it not being sent. Rescheduling for the 2nd time wasn’t helpful either even with an invite. Seems strange.
