I had a similar revelation when I went from 1-2. The saying that your first million is the hardest is true…but in reality it’s because it’s mathematical. 1-2 million is doubling your money. But to go from 0-1 you have to double your money over and over and over.
I think it was 12 years of work to get to 1m, 4 more years to get to 2m, and less than 3 years to get to 3m. Income has obviously gone up during that period.
Not to be a downer, but I would be careful making decisions based on 2 years of inflated (individual name or index?) equity. Almost all of that 1 > 2M looks to be from the AI gains in the market. Don’t assume the rate of appreciation will continue; consider your risk exposure and think about options in the down scenario. That being said, >40% is impressive savings. Congrats!
The S&P500 has returned 17% for over a decade, well above historical averages. Tech indices have been more than that. Diversify globally. 💙
Good for you! The power of compounding. And an incredible bull market for a ~decade.
My family's NW in the month of April grew by more than what we will make this whole year.
I started investing in the end of 2019 and across retirement, taxable, conservative home equity, I’m at 1.3m. We’re a single income one kid family. Hoping to escape the matrix by age 55. Currently 39. Your post gives me hope.

The next bear market is really going to be a shock to many of us.

Talk of "coasting" and retiring in a decade is unrealistic.
Your portfolio is $1.6m. You have said your desired retirement portfolio is $5m.
If you continue saving $100k a year, and if equity returns are a steady 5% real, then your goal would take 14 years to reach. Without saving, 24 years.
And if equity returns are worse than average over the period, perhaps considerably longer than 24 years.
And if you "Coast" by inflating your lifestyle, will your retirement spending inflate too, thereby making the goal more than $5 million?
I do not recommend "coasting" from this position, and definitely not "coasting" while relying on unrealistic return assumptions.

And for periods of 10 years & especially less than that, consider a plan B for real return being zero.
Could easily happen
I am on my journey of $1m. How did you reached there? How much money you saved per month? How much time it took you? And where did you invested your investments monthly? Stocks, 401k, real estate?
S&P500 index funds for 80%+ of it.
