Keep a box near you for crap/junk.
Decorate your space in a way that makes you happy. It'll be easier to maintain.
Having organization items and developing a routine that keeps things in specific places will help keep your desk the way you want it. For example, I teach so I have a plastic pull out draw for each class that is stacked up on a short bookcase, not on my desk, where “to be graded work” goes, a folder for late work on a small shelf in front of my desk and a magnetic folder for each class attached to one of my filing cabinets where graded work goes. I take work out of the box , grade it, record it and move it to the magnetic out folders where it can be passed back next class. Everything has a place so it is only on my desk when I’m using it. Books & other items have specific places they live. I have a desk flip book thing where I keep my quick reference stuff (school map, teacher ext, who to contact for list etc) The key is don’t wait, as soon as you’re done, put it away. Without the routine, my desk used to be an homage to Jenga. I’d know where things were but by December I couldn’t tell you the color of my desk. Developing the routine took time( be patient with yourself). However, I’ve reached the point where leaving anything other than pictures & post it notes (my reminders) pushes me to fix it. The key to developing this is look at what you do and the order you use or that makes the most sense to completing tasks. Think about what you need to hang out more than a day and how to store that in a way that is easy to get to but is not piled on your desk. Hanging folders, stack up drawers, binders, W/ Labels etc are your friend. I even have a box ( looks like a tackle box or makeup box with 12 drawers) where I store pens, pencils, highlighters, staples, paper clips, stamps, paper passes, bandaids etc).
This did NOT happen overnight. As I got one thing under control, I tackled a new problem and I’m still refining but it makes a huge difference.
