I thought sounding really upbeat would be unprofessional since people sometimes call in feeling unwell. Unfortunately, my satisfaction scores were not that great. I realized my voice sounded bored when some of my phone calls were played back to me. So I've been trying to sound more upbeat for the past month, but I start to trip over my words when I'm not using my normal voice. What have you found helpful to make your voice sound pleasant but professional and maintain that throughout the call?

Can you find a middle ground where you don't sound bored but don't feel like you're acting? I find smiling while I talk helps without feeling like I have to perform or anything like that.

helpful

I could try that! I'm willing to try anything at this point. I feel like I've been too focused on it, and it's starting to stress me out and take my attention off of even listening to the customer. I don't want that either!

I always just be myself, thats the easiest. I try not to be someone that I'm not it just doesn't work. It will come with practice don't worry you've got this. Good luck

When you speak in a low voice, it forces people to listen more intently, therefore completely understanding what you're saying and making the call better overall.

A comfortable speaking tone at a slightly slower-than-normal speed allows my voice to slightly soften, which in turn allows me to conserve energy. Take your time when talking and as you wrap up, thank the caller by name, and in your closing smile when you say goodbye.

Where do you find the time to get everything done in the day when you have multiple partners, associates and equity partners that interrupt you and want things turned around immediately while simultaneously working on deadlines? I feel like I’m the only one that can’t manage a 70+ case load without letting someone down. I constantly have to say “Can I do this tomorrow?” Etc. I don’t even have time to bill on the clock. I work until 7p at least every night. Top 10 family law firm.

I’ve been at a job for a few months and hate it - partners set unrealistic deadlines, micromanage, and create work that truly is not necessary/push urgency when there is no real urgency. I had other offers prior to accepting this job that may still be options, and going back to my old job (for a pay cut) might also be an option. I can’t tell if this is just burnout, growing pains, or just an untenable work environment. Would you ride it out for a year at new job or pursue other options? HELP!

I have an interview with Korn Ferry for an associate principal role and am curious about others’ experiences have been with work-life balance here. Also, I have an idea of what I should be compensated in this type of role, but any insights on how they pay compared to others would be helpful. Are you traveling during the pandemic or have client interactions been virtual? Lastly, if you are a consultant here, are you on billable hours? My current consulting role is not - so this would be new.

Have you ever taken a career slow down? I am feeling burnt out from COVID and the incremental responsibilities thrown my way over the last 5+ years. I feel like my health has deteriorated. Any lessons learned or success stories about career slowdowns?

Has anyone left healthcare and is now really happy? I’m an MSN, RN with 12 years hospital experience. I’m burned out and tired of making crap pay. It’s a total shift that would really heal my work-life balance, job satisfaction and budget. My only fear is that I would not be using the license and degree that I worked so hard for.
