I went to private white schools K-12. STEM major at a PWI in undergrad. PWI law school. I am no stranger to being the only or one of the only Black people. Sometimes even the only POC. So why does it seem to weigh on me SO much harder in practice? I’m the only Black person in my group, one of 3 in my office, and one of 10 in the entire 700+ person firm. However, all of my other social spaces (family, friends, organizations, church) are still Black & South Asian. So why does it feel so weird now?

I had a similar educational experience.

One difference in law practice is that it’s not a meritocracy—if you do good work, you can’t always get promoted and get that “A.” Law practice is often deeply rooted in, and even the source of, societal segregation. It’s hard to defeat those color lines, especially if the business and supervisors you work for benefit from that segregation.

Have you ever been told off by an older attorney of color? We have one Black partner at our firm and in conversation with him this morning he told me I should work on sounding and looking "more professional" and not let my "tone" or "bad attitude" get in the way. I don't think I've ever had a bad attitude at work, and whatever "tone" I'm speaking in it's my normal one. As a Black woman I just feel super weird about it and kind of sad.

What’s the best way to deal with a partner that prefers working solo? For context, this writer I work with conceptualizes by himself, emails the Account team, gives deep input, and makes decisions for us without consulting with me (his “partner”) most of the time. While I appreciate his proactiveness, I feel excluded, limited, and without much room to co-lead the work with him. I don’t know how to bring this up without sounding like I’m b*tching about it.

How bad is it to leave an understaffed team right before fall busy for a job in a new city? Part of me doesn’t care at all b/c it’s a business decision, part feels like I’m totally screwing the team.

Just started a new role in industry 2 months ago and my manager sent me a long email today saying he is not happy with my performance and is not at par with my level. They might be building a case to let me go.

Preparing to give notice to my current firm. Accepted an amazing opportunity to lateral at a more prestigious firm (better compensation, lower billables, and shorter commute).
I’m excited to make this jump, but it’s still bittersweet for me because the partners at my current firm are truly amazing and I have learned a lot from them over the past few years and will miss them a lot. Any insight on the best way to have this convo without burning bridges? Thanks!
