I’m mid-level in my HR career at my current company and an upcoming Master’s graduate. Studying for my SHRM-CP too. How did you make the transition to that next level? What skills do you need, or is it really just based on YOE (I am the youngest compared to my teammates, many who have 10+ YOE)? I feel like career pathing is not very clear at my company. Each time I ask for guidance on this from my manager, I get told they’ll look into it.... would love some external mentorship and thoughts 🙏🏼

1.) Get a better manager! 🙃
2.) Confidence and calm. Volunteering for projects that are beyond your current skills is the best way to grow, get noticed and get promoted. You’ll get a lot more from those activities than studying (though that’s great too!)

Get a better manager? What?

1) You need to obtain knowledge in all HR areas. Volunteering to help in projects for other functions usually is the best way.
2) Show initiative, bring relevant ideas and exceed expectations of your internal clients and manager. Nobody ever got promoted for obtaining certifications.
Personally in my 17 years of career I was promoted either because
1) I was already doing the job and was an informal leader of the function
2) Or I created a function myself, like I started HR analytics when nobody asked me too, and when it became big enough to be a separate function I was the first who was asked to lead it
3) Or it was really a dumpster fire of a job, and I have a reputation of a fixer

I find that the best way to influence your managers to get what you want in your career is to make your business partners your raving fans. When you are partnering with them to drive solutions they are looking for they will advocate for you to help solve them and influence your manager to get you on the projects.. The same goes for your internal HR team, When you serve them, they will advocate for you. It sounds as if your manager doesn't have much time for you and that future opportunities are limited. If that is the case, at some point you can consider looking for a company that does have future growth potential that supports your career growth.

Yup, I’m an HRBP. Been with my company for 3 years. Have 4 years of experience. And also have my masters. No, SHRM certification. For context I’m 27, next closest person in age on my team is 50. I recognize that HRBP experience typically requires 6-8 YOE. However, my peers from business school have been promoted faster than me at similar companies and it’s gotten to the point where I feel my masters degree and good performance are not truly valued. To shed even more light, I came into my current company via a 2 year development program which is a pipeline for future HR leaders. So, even with all these accolades promotions are slim and rather than accepting it I’ve decided to look externally.

I appreciate the director’s advice above. It’s no secret that COVID has really required HR to be more hands on so ive gotten GREAT experience this year and have taken even more projects. So, for that I’m thankful. But, at the end of the day, when you have the prerequisites for the next step, you just have to trust in yourself and go somewhere where they’ll properly reward you.

Hope this help!

I feel like I need support to lead because when I try to start initiatives or get involved in certain initiatives and then connect with my manager or senior manager on our regular update meetings, they tell me not to do it and to delegate it to someone else. I’m afraid that if I continue to work on these projects even after they tell me not to, it would not be appreciated. I want to go into a specific area of our HR practice, but the feeling I get is that they do not want me to spend time developing in that space.

You’re not alone. I have numerous clients that have this exact problem. The first step I have them do is identify what they consider to be the next step. Is it a higher title— HR Business Partner to Sr. HR Business Partner or HR Manager? Is there a defined next step position at your company that may be opening soon? Do you want to supervise individuals? Be responsible for more complexed projects? Have more autonomy, authority and decision making responsibility? Write out what the next job would look like. Pro Tip: use your bosses job description and highlight the tasks you’d like to be responsible for. I actually have a free five day career clarity cleanse program that helps you identify exactly what you want relative to your position, peers, perks and company.

Are you an HRP at Accenture because this sounds very familiar. If so, I feel like we’re all in the same boat, and with the recent re-org, it seems like there is even less concern for our career development than ever before.

If I didn’t directly know the person, I’d interview to see how I do, but I don’t want to waste this person’s time for the time being. What would you do?

Any HR Personnel in Berlin, Germany ?

Looking for advice! I was approved to work remotely but my salary will decrease 10%. I received two raises so the decrease brings me down to my previous salary. I was told that it’s due to the cost of labor in the area.

I’ve been with my company for 8+ yrs, I love my manager and the work I do (engagement, recognition, & wellness programs) but I feel like I’m limiting myself since I have the experience, an HRM degree, and SHRM-CP credentials.

Should I apply for roles outside the company?

So now they have to worker harder to get $50k they were already making. (Not a decision based on employee performance, they’ve been crushing it.
