Seeing so many posts about people still not seeing the parents and family because of COVID is making me so sad. 😞 when does it end? Loved ones are going to pass before there is a vaccine. Life is just passing us by and it’s so sad.

I’m not seeing family in person this year and don’t feel like life is passing me by. I talk to them multiple times a week. We will see each other when it is safe to do so.

Are you all truly arguing over who is missing their parents the right way? Some too much, some too little...it’s insanity!

I’m with the folks who are able to rationalize this and say that yes, I’d prefer to see them but if rather see them next year and the year after that and after that than see them now and put them at any kind of risk. So, having made that decision I’m ok with it. It’s temporary and for this saying people are dying - well, I’ll not miss them more or less if they died based on when I last saw them. It’ll be gutting regardless.

But that’s just me. Some folks are more emotional and less rational. And that’s fine. But it’s the emotional ones who are spreading this (see the wedding in Maine).

I agree with A1 - I have been tested, so has my family and we agreed to be with each other. We also agreed that If we get sick, we get sick. This isn't a matter of what is right or wrong. This is a matter of personal choice and allowing those around you to make their own choice. Just like everything else in life.

Lol. Love how this is misconstrued as “this person thinks it’s a hoax.” I am by no means saying that it isn’t serious, but it also is not even close to warrant the level of fear that’s being pumped into our society and economy. Look at the data, yes it’s killed 180k plus, but really, that’s a speck in comparison what we thought totals would look like. The Spanish flu killed 195k+ Americans in less than a single month (Oct 1918). Back then, we didn’t have millions of Americans traveling overseas and domestically in a matter of weeks either right before we really started testing during the months of January and February. Additionally, back in March, April we were seeing dramatic spikes in hospitalizations compared to the dramatic spikes in positive cases. Those two curves for July, August don’t even look close to the same, even with the same, if not worse, dramatic spikes in cases. Look, there’s absolutely zero chance any more to actually contain this virus. We are going to have to find a way to deal with this that’s not shutting things down. Also, just look at Sweden’s data, zero shut down and their cases/hospitalizations keep dramatically declining by the day. Yeah, they took a big risk but it also paid off.

Ended a while ago for me. I’m not living like a shut-in for a year. Y’all can be scared if you want 🤷‍♂️

I should clarify. In public, I wear a mask and social distance. When visiting close friends and family (after discussing before), I do neither. Nor do my close friends and family.

I think most people on this bowl can afford a week or two in a hotel room and a Covid test or two. Not sure what the hesitation is

like

Yes but that doesn’t take into account people who are high risk and can’t travel to the place where their family is to do the quarantine.

like

When people stop fucking around throwing parties, wear their masks everywhere, submit to contact tracing, and hold their friends/family accountable for same. That’ll get us their in <6 months but apparently we L&D rather take the 18-24 month road.

Agreed with this. Was lucky in the sense that when COVID lockdowns hit, I was with my parents and ended up staying with them for the last 6 months. I recently got a new job in another country (much better for my career) and I am being asked to be physically present there...I will feel sad leaving them, but hope nothing negative happens while I am gone. There are a bunch of travel restrictions in the country I'm going to, so it makes it quite tough. I hear you OP...it is very sad. Thank you for the post, I feel a bit better to know that I am not alone in this struggle.

I still see my family, just outside and several feet apart. If you take the proper precautions it's fine. I've gotten used to having seating more spread out on decks/patios so it doesn't feel as weird now as it did in April. We also just do air hugs or elbow greetings.

helpful

Yup!! I’m wondering how that will go in the winter but we will just have to adapt

As someone in low transmission state with parents in a bordering state with travel restrictions, I’d love to go see them, but there is no way I’m taking my kids out of daycare for 2 weeks. Life would be simpler if no one gave a sh*t about anything and we all just did what we want, but that’s probably why we haven’t stopped dealing with this....at least where I am, most daycares require you to stay away for 14 days even with a negative test when you travel somewhere that has restrictions, because you would test negative during the incubation period...

Repost - The % of the African American population killed by police in 2019 is roughly 0.0005%. It was 235 people. But around the same year 6,000 african americans were killed by eachother. How do we reconcile these facts? In 2013, 72% of african americans were born to single parent households; one of the strongest indicators of future poverty and criminal disposition. Can we acknowledge and fix instances of police brutality while also not ignoring our cultural problems as well?
