How do you let go of the need to be liked by subordinates? I have a people pleasing streak.

Are you trying to justify you're worth to yourself?
Treat your subordinates as adults, give them clear expectations, give them challenges and opportunities to grow.
Great you have good rapport with your staff, but if you're not seen to be leading and setting standards, they won't follow, regardless of how likable you are.
Maybe get a coach/ mentor to help you thru this transition.

You need to transition the Like to Respect and where possible share the Why on decisions.

Then they may not like you and the decisions but they will respect you and the decisions.

like

Great leaders inspire loyalty not hatred. But great leaders are brave and make tough decisions. Be open about what you expect, be fair and reasonable, and explain why… as long as you have decent judgement, people will respect you and your authenticity. That typically inspires loyalty. Also don’t forget empathy.

Don’t let go of it. Just want to be liked for the right reasons!

I need advice getting the partners in my small group at a big law firm to be upfront with their criticism. I’ve come to find that it’s the “culture” in my group that the partners will not provide direct criticism but instead tell the only mid-level associate the problems (after months of noticing them) and then she calls me (first year) and will tell me (“Partner X and Partner Y and I have noticed this over the past few months”). How do I change I communicate that I want direct feedback?

Just got out of a meeting with a client. Talk about uncomfortable- they'd fired their director that morning and he ran in screaming at the team. They ended up calling security to kick him out!

“The client has authorized 3 hours of billable research and 1 billable hour for writing the memo, that should be MORE than sufficient to research the position of each circuit on this asinine issue that I thought of at 3AM this morning because I couldn’t sleep so I thought of ways to ruin your life instead!!!! Xoxo managing partner.”

Supervisory advice on helping a junior?

Recently we got in a graduate that has a Masters in business admin and loves to gloat about how well he did but... this hasn't transferred across to his quality of work.

Between me and my manager we have tried multiple approaches in trying to get him up to speed and understanding the accounting process for his allocation. However it seems he still struggles to understand the basics of debits/credits and an accrual. Anyone have any tips?

Love: WFH, Flexibility of not being “chained to desk” all day because I don’t have to take outside customer calls, ability to complete work assigned at any time of day within 72hrs, no micromanaging from my Supervisor, feeling like I’m my own boss

Hate: getting assigned bulks from others and it throws off efficiency of reviewing suits, monotony, depositions
