I have a particular student who's always awkward to do therapy with because they have a cursing habit. In SpEd, as you know, it is always more complicated navigating this subject with the student/parents. Does anyone have any tips on how best to approach this? I'm just tired of tip-toeing around the student and it would be nice to be able to put them in groups with other students when needed.

I give gentle reminders about home language and school language! I tell my little sailor mouths that home language is up to your grown ups at home but in school we don’t use those words when we talk. I honestly don’t reach out to parents about it unless a student is swearing to put another kid/adult down (f you, you’re a b, F off etc). I’m less strict about one slipping through in casual conversation. Ah dammit was a favorite of one of my kids a few years ago and we worked on other things we could say instead of- oh sugar, ah darn, etc.

Not knowing the age, some strategies may not be appropriate. I'd just say, find a carrot. Something the student will be motivated to adjust their language for.
I don't know how bad the problem is. At the 18-21 transition level, we reinforce professional standards including language. We also understand that when going into the working world, students are going to hear some language. They don't have to copy the language, and they also don't need to be overly offended by language.

My mother who was German would tell us that profanity is just a word. Words hold absolutely no meaning unless you make it a big deal, per my mother. As a school social worker, most of the kids I worked with as you can imagine swore like sailors.
If I concentrated on their words of profanity I would literally interrupted their entire train of thought. I did this when I was first started out but within a few years abandoned it. I need to hear the crux of their bief, issue, anger, etc. We can work on appropriate later once sifting through some of those more important issues.

But one week back after visiting her, I felt a strange detachment from her and our conversation topic got repetitive and stale quick. Any advice?

They used to always be all about spending time together and now seems like I have to remind them to put us first in the past month. We both work hard and have kids so life is more complicated. Vent over.

I feel like I'm at my wits end. I teach self-contained classes and according to the ISBE website my classes shouldn't be more than 8 students unless I have an aide - then it can be 10. I have no aide and most of my classes are around 14 kids. Some with behavior plans that are only out of our behavior room setting for my class... Is anybody else out there going through illegal class sizes for self-contained? How are you dealing? Maybe a vent session is in order.

It is 23 days into the school year and the team members all make different plans and as a result, nothing is being accomplished.
