I know my friends and family respect me for working so hard in my career, but things can get heated in social situations. Specifically, everyone jokes about me being a narc (certain substances aren't legal in my state). I'm all for legalizing marijuana, etc. but it's not legal here yet. I'm just doing my job. How can I move on from these conversations without seeming defensive or petty?

I’m honest about my opinions about things such as marijuana. I also took a pretty honest stance about it at the office. Thankfully I work in a specific niche unit, so didn’t really have to prosecute marijuana cases. I think candor about the issues tends to negate the jokes about being a narc.

I also think it’s really important that we, as prosecutors, are able to step back and scrutinize our office and our office’s policies and see if they are practicing responsible prosecution. It’s hard to be “law enforcement” right now. We have to do our best for ALL members of the community and push for alternatives to incarceration (where appropriate) and better practices.

If you focus on those issues with your family, hopefully they can see the important work you do. If not, tell them to fuck right off.

PARTNERS: two questions —1. If you see an associate has really low hours for the month, do you imagine them chillen on a beach somewhere or do you consider they probably spent most of their days sitting in front of the computer being “available”? 2. If you send an associate a random e-mail on a weekend like “Can you pull X and send to Y”, would you get annoyed if they responded saying they weren’t by a comp or would you consider it reasonable that they wouldn’t be by a comp on a weekend?
