If you were starting a mid-sized company of your own, what would be your top diversity & inclusion goals to realize by the end of your 2nd year? I work for a friends start up and have next to no experience, trying to not screw up too badly.

100% depends on the demographics of the company as it stands now. That being said, if you have over 10 diverse employee's I would consider starting an ERG as one of your goals to bring awareness to the diversity in your workplace and make employees feel like they have a safe space to discuss what they need to.

The size and culture of your company plays a big part in what to do. You don't want to do too much too fast without building it up and without buy in from senior leadership. Starting up a DEI Committee/Council is a good first step. ERGs/Affinity groups are good as well. But should be employee ran and only started if an employee brings the idea.

It would be establishing a cultural that supports Diversity, Equity & Inclusion. Otherwise you won’t have any success. “Diversity is being invited to the party. Inclusion is being asked to dance.” Vernā Myers

5-year Strategic Plan and Strong data…

Conduct a DEAI assessment of all internal operations (recruitment, hiring and retention practices) and external facing products and services. Would someone from a different background be able to observe true investments in DEI? …Where do you post vacant positions so that someone from a diverse background can access it? How you reviewed interview questions to remove bias from the interview process? Re external things, what’s on your website that says diversity is important? Have you included diverse perspectives in the development and testing of your product/service?

From that report use a SWOT analysis to determine
where your strengths and growth areas are and devise a plan to address what needs to be improved.

You could use your findings to share with team members (i.e., ERG) and get authentic buy-in.

Any WIT in Boston? I'm interviewing for a really exciting opportunity in downtown and would be relocating there after it's safe. Would love to hear about any groups or resources!

Bonus points for intersectionality and welcoming of LGBT individuals (I'm a gender non-conforming butch lesbian). Bonus bonus points for a group that isn't all white.

Also where should I be looking to live? I heard Boston has a lot of racism issues and is very segregated...

Do NOT claim you are "colorblind" in the workplace. 1. DE&I knowledge is now a core leadership competency. Colorblind claims will earn you the reputation of being DEI-ignorant at best & racist at worst. 2. Colorblindness within the context of workplace diversity is an obvious lie. You do NOT want to be painted as an intellectually dishonest leader. 3. Colorblind claims signal that you lack the leadership skills & vocabulary to have key conversations. Ask questions here, in this safe space.

Help! I'm a Sped teacher (ELA inclusion) that comes home to a High Functioning Autistic 9 yr old with ADHD and a slew of sensory issues that has sworn off soap 🤢. I've made visual check list for bathroom processes, bought timers, tried different bars and body washeds with net sponges, towels and even invested in a pricey showerhead with multiple settings. As a leader in cyber, one of my aspirations is to increase the diversity of any organization that I am a part of.

For example…When I was in Big4, I referred several diverse candidates who are thriving & now, at McKinsey & Company, I set a personal goal to refer 1 diverse candidate, especially in (but not necessarily exclusive to) cyber/tech/IT, for every month of my tenure.

I9 verification support needed:

Can an employee use a Virginia Criminal Justice Agency Offender Information Form for the i9? USIC website says “The ID document listed first in List B does not have to be a driver's license - it can be any government-issued ID card, even a parolee's ID card if the date of birth, gender, height, eye color, and address are on it.” But it’s a certified FORM not ID card. Thoughts?

Has anyone done a 2-hr roundtrip daily commute for years? Unfortunately in this situation due to location of spouse’s job -it’s fairly rural and that area doesn’t have the same level of education (kid is about to start K), diversity, convenience, jobs opps me, stuff to do or parks as our current city has. Switching jobs is not an option for him unfortunately. I do feel very guilty about the long commute for him though.

Hi all,

My boss makes jokes about me being from a different country whenever there is a work meeting or a gathering with coworkers, even though he knows where I am from. This usually occurs when I meet new work-related people or for example if I am in a situation that involves ethnic related subjects.

What is this? This is normal?

Stereotyping?
Racism?

The first time I ignored that, but now it has become a pattern and is bothering me now. I am south-American working in the UK.
