You must be such a joy to work with...

Nah I'm just fun at parties

From one soulless robot to another, I wish all meetings could start with "Let me share my screen, I have a question for you."
If there is time at the end, I will gladly act excited about your kid, pet, dinner last night, widget collection, or whatever gives you a sense of purpose. But please start with the point.

If the meeting objectives are met, we can talk about all of the above. Let it rain KPMG

It’s called empathy.

Not everyone likes the things you think are acceptable topics either OP. Just gotta learn to deal with it. For people who have kids, it's a huge part of their lives and is especially stressful right now. Let them talk and share amongst themselves and tune it out.

Feel the same about pets

Opposite here. I’ll take your dog stories (bonus if you send me photos). Your kid stories...eh
I feel you OP. I don’t think you lack empathy. Especially if you’re being excluded from conversations because you don’t have kids. It’s rude. Pick more accessible topics, people!
I’m talking more about lunches and post-meeting chat, my b.
Look, I get it. I hate sports. Yet I work in an office where every man will talk for hours about stats, players, gameplays, “what our chances are this year”, and all this other sport bullshit. Instead of bitching about it, I smile, nod, and say “Go Eagles”.
Basically there’s always going to be shit you don’t care about. People are home, so they don’t have much to talk about other than kids. Such is life.
Haha yes. I live in a very sports centric town. My dad coached like 3 sports when I was a kid and I was dragged to all these games, so I too can bs a conversation about it. At this point I’ve gotten a good amount of practice feigning interest with clients, but one day I’d love to ramble on about a new broadway show, the novel I’m reading, or my garden.

I don’t care either but I’ve learned to fake it enough for people to think I do.
Haha ...same here 😂
For some reason all my boss could talk about was smoking things (cooking). Smoking brisket. Smoking garlic. Making some sort of smoked butter nonsense. Literally this is the only topic we could cover. Give me the kid or dog conversation. I can’t hear about smoked meat any more. Only two people contributed to this conversation ever. The rest of us would sit in silence until the blessed meeting would start.
Can we switch bosses? I’d love to talk about this for a while. Instead I get sports talk. Lol
I have an infant and it’s sooooooo obnoxious when people ask/talk about her. I’m serious. Let’s just get this shit over with. My female manager does this the most. She doesn’t have kids, she’s actually told me her dog is just like my baby and how she can’t wait to go through menopause so she can be in the clear. Yet... “how’s the baby?” Is all she can ask.
Shit, now I’ve been talking about my baby. But for real, meetings suck. Get in and get out.
Rising Star
Sounds like she's just trying to take interest in you as a person and their babies are normally something people like to talk about. I'd take it as a positive sign, even if it's aggravating.

Many people need/want to connect with work people on personal level. If you hate so much talking about kids start conversations about something else. How was your weekend. What's the weather like there. Sports. Whatever. It's hard these days bc we dont get that social chit chat in the office anymore so we talk in meetings. It's a good thing. When you get to know ppl on personal level you work better together
It’s still the best thing I’ve ever done and I’m not just saying that. Can it be frustrating and exhausting? Sure. But it is the coolest thing in the world to watch my children learn and grow and become their own people with their own thoughts and opinions. It’s crazy how it works. The intensity of the love you feel for your own children is unreal. It’s not that you don’t have a life, it’s that you have a different life. It’s like you get to experience things for the first time again through their eyes. I can’t wait till my kids are old enough to really travel and I can take them places and see those places again with fresh eyes. Kids bring the magic back to life. They also bring exhaustion and frustration. Exhaustion and frustration with flashes of magic 🤷♀️
My dog just did the cutest thing. What were we talking about? Oh right, kids.
wish your parents felt the same way

Shut up about your kids or personal life. Meetings are to discuss work get in and get out. If you need to talk about your personal life get a therapist.
Chief
It’s even weirder when they want to spend half the meeting talking about YOUR kids...
I can’t imagine what parents are going through right now juggling home schooling and work. However I’ve noticed the excuses abou needing to leave to go get formula more often than ever before-Amazon. I’m not doing your work for you
Haha my hubs just asked me this morning, Am I am ornery old coot if I don’t care about baby pix sent to the entire company, or are the senders being narcissistic?
Ask them about something else and the conversation won’t be about kids. Never ask anyone questions beyond work, you’ve ceded control of those conversations.
Pro
I HATE when the person talking about their kids or whatever is also the same person complaining about how long work takes or how long it takes to do. Maybe we'd have more time to handle it if SOMEONE didn't spend so much time talking about their kids. And this person is frequently the boss or client; it is much easier to cut short a conversation with a peer or subordinate.
Same
If it’s the client let them talk about their kids. It builds rapport. They are less likely to chew you out for under-delivering if you ask them how Little Johnny is doing at soccer practice
