Sounds to me like they need to do an FBA to see if his LRE is where he is. He may need more through an EBD class. Is he showing any signs of AU?
I agree. An FBA should be done. The results of the FBA would drive the BIP. Sometimes prior to the BIP kids will be put on a simple checklist or a point sheet that might help in the meantime.
I would also suggest that he either gets regularly scheduled breaks, or he gets a break pass to use when needed. A 5 point scale might be a good idea too. Also, sometimes sitting in an alternative seating arrangement works, like a T-stool, Pilates ball.
If he’s not in medication, that might be an option. My middle son was extremely inattentive in 1st and 2nd grade, we started him on meds and it was like an immediate change. He went off them by himself in 9 th grade and picked them back up in college. He’s the IT supervisor for our district. He’s doing well, just bought a house. My point is that meds aren’t all bad lol
Ask for an MFE (Multi Factor Evaluation) from the psychologist at school or through a recommendation from the pediatrician. That's how we found out our son was dyslexic, ADHD, anxiety, and borderline depression. He was in 5th grade at the time, and we were told no Autism because he was tested for it during the MFE. He's now in his early 20s and can manage his own life through the strategies put in place to help with executive function and organizational skills. He is still messy, but he better understands what he needs and how he functions differently from others. We only used meds during school days only but waited until he was a little older in middle and high school.
