My parents have been dead for a while and my siblings are scattered/estranged. Wish I had some family to see.
Asking without judgement: If you don’t feel like your family really contributes anything to your life, have you reflected on whether you contribute anything to theirs, beyond “showing up” at holidays? My relationships with my siblings got a lot better when I started making deposits instead of withdrawals, to stretch a metaphor.
How much do you care about your family’s hobbies, interests, and life beyond a surface level?
Kinda hard for me when it’s Fox News and the end days and Disney+ 😂

What a strange post for Fishbowl.
Is it? I feel like people who work in advertising tend to have similar shared experiences and personalities so thought it was something others might have perspectives about
The most expensive thing in life is your time. I would spend my entire life’s savings to go back to my Dad’s house for the holidays one more time now that he’s gone.
I stopped going home for the holidays.
Only my mom is the direct family member. Rather than visiting me for my bday which falls on thanksgiving she would rather go to her friends house and celebrate it there and has been guilting me because that is not how I want to spend my birthday. I’d rather spend thanksgiving alone then.
Shutting you out is not loving either
2000?? You going international? I am kinda getting over the holiday travel tho I get it
Zoom?
I get it. 20+ years in the industry and my mom still thinks I work as a graphic designer in a print shop. Despite me explaining, showing her my work, etc, she just can't afford the brain capacity to understand what I do for a living.
SAD1, 😂 that’s equally as cute as funny
I love seeing my family, we’re like a big group of friends who catch up once or twice a year when I fly home. When we aren’t at home we’re constantly catching up over WhatsApp/Facetime. My siblings are my best friends. Sounds like you didn’t get so lucky in that sense, which is totally fair but don’t paint every family with the same brush 😀

Woof. That was not my experience at all, thank goodness. I hope you develop a better relationship with your family.
I’m at the age when I hope my son leaves NYC to come see his dear old dad (and mom). We may take too much of an interest…?
@Senior Copywriter - It doesn’t sound like to me that you don’t love your family. You just want them to show interest in your life as you have in theirs. Anyone would feel that way. Perhaps you can tell them that it would mean a lot to you if they tried to reciprocate interest. And if they don’t, then you know you tried and they’ll get the point why you don’t visit anymore. We can’t always expect our family to read our minds.
I dont go for holidays but I usually always try to go for life events like weddings, grad parties, big birthdays, etc. no one will remember thanksgiving 2022 but they will remember you being there for their 40th birthday. I mainly do it so I can say to myself that I made the effort and I feel good about it. It doesn’t put a huge dent in my vacay time or budget though. Might feel different if it did.
I’m staying home for Christmas
oof. things will get better man
