$50 is really high. We pay $30 for two infants in NYC.
Seems EXTREMELY high- we paid $28/hr for two infants in NYC over the table with a very experience and fabulous nanny. She took a small paycut to work with us because we clicked though….
I send my infant to daycare full time and it costs around $2400 a month, which comes out to less than $15 an hour. I live in a high col area too (coastal socal).
Ooof daycare is insane. We pay $1600/mo per kid. The nanny does 20 hours - some nights and weekend afternoons.
NYC - we pay $25/hour for a full time nanny (1 toddler). $50 seems really high but only you can assess whether that’s fair and the value / peace of mind that she brings to your family.
$50 is insane. I am impressed she even asked for that. We paid our excellent nanny on the books $25/hr in NYC for two kids. We were getting a deal, but $50 seems waaaaay too high.
$35hr over the table for an experienced nanny you trust is within range for a HCOL area. It’s exactly what we pay. It’s not crazy for her to ask $50hr for two, that’s sticker shock but on the high end of market. She should be elite, though. Can you put the older kid in daycare and have her just do the younger? That was our move.
When I google nanny rates in NYC/other HCOL cities, the data I get back is in the $25-30/hr range even for 2 kids. It just seems low, especially for someone you depend on so much. Am I crazy to be paying this much?
Depends on hours. We pay about 60k per year but it’s more than 40 hours (some weeks upward of 50 hours). At 50 per hour, that’s 100k per year for 2000 hours. Doesn’t that seem high?
I support your decision. If it’s not a large amount for you and you help out this person, it’s a good thing. I’d pay our nanny more if we made more. Spending for the welfare of my kids is the only money I spend happily. Most other things seem much more wasteful.
