Is it harder to meet billables in certain practice areas? I’m in T&E and in busy times I’ll be working on 15 different clients in a single day. I feel like I lose so much time task-switching and my billable hours also don’t reflect the mental load I carry around thinking about all the moving parts for so many different clients. Has anyone else had a similar experience? Have you found any time entry or organizational tools that have helped you?

Absolutely. You need to learn to bill more aggressively. No emails are free and clients pay for time you spend opening files/switching to their matter. I go through my inbox and outbox for each day and make sure all of my email correspondence and internal calls are accounted for. I also try to switch my timer immediately so the time between matters is always accounted for (no gap with no timers on while switching between matters).

A reminder to those who are stressed about your billable hours that your value is more than your pure productivity. When we’re all comparing/complaining about hours at the end of the year are we including pro bono hours in that total? I’m nearing 2050 billables for the year but I have another 500 pro bono hours that should be added on. At the same time, I keep hearing about all these people straight billing 2,400+. Trying to determine if I should’ve tried to pick up more billable work to stay in the middle of the pack (i.e. not interested in partnership, just trying not to get canned).

Small firm owners need pov! Some good news after almost 11 months of applying and interviews and lots of rejections finally got an offer! In NYC small firm, ex big law folks, no billable hours, niche practice area, appearance of forwarded thinking firm, remote till who knows when, emphasis on pro bono initiatives and building book of business. The catch salary. Was making around 140k at last firm with 1800 billable. Offer is 85k and revist to bump to around 100k in several months after review

How to deal with not being staffed on deals and seeing others in your year be staffed? When asking partners directly for work, they refer you to the staffing partners. When asking staffing partners (repeatedly), they say “thanks for interest, we will have something soon.” Weeks and weeks pass by and you’re always below where you should be for billable hours (at this point, very far below). All reviews are essentially perfect and no negative feedback. Extremely frustrating and discouraging.

Man this Bowl is filled with some angry mid-levels. We get it, this job was hard for you, but it is for juniors now, too. Stop punching down.

I don’t think the juniors are entitled, they just want to share in their firms’ wealth. Surely any salary increases for the Classes of 2019, 2020, and 2021 would easily pay for themselves through billable hours.

I think job hunting and interviews are like dating. When you get introduced through friends you have more success. You have to go through so many to find the right one. You either click right away, everything goes smooth and you book the second date or everything goes wrong and you get ghosted. After the first date you meet the friends. But you have to win them over to continue. No matter how careful you are choosing, most people end up breaking up after 1-2 years to have different experience.
