I’ve worked at AT&T as a sales consultant for 6 years and 8 months where we prospect, uncover, and close on leads. I’ve used Salesforce for the past 4 years during my tenure. I’ve done B2B sales where I’ve received awards for it for 2 years consecutively. Loads of troubleshooting, uncovering needs through consultative styled selling, and tech app subscriptions.
I was wondering if I have the necessary skills to transition into a tech sales role. If so, what would be the best role/fit for me?Amazon Salesforce Google @

Time to shop the market
Who is telling you this, your manager or the hiring manger? If it is your manager telling you this, they have a vested interest in keeping a top performing IC on his or her team.
That said, management is definitely different than sales, and your current comp may very well exceed that of middle management. If you want to get out of the grind, and shoot for upper management, it may take a proverbial step or two back to get there.
Or. We don’t think you’d make a good manager.
Leave , you deserve more
Your manager should always be advocating for your career advancement. Rather than telling you to wait your turn, they should either be giving you opportunities to showcase your leadership skills or help grow those competencies. Might be time to join a different team or different company.
Same thing is happening to me too! Keeps telling me to “wait my turn”
a Global Strategic Acct Manager: May I ask why type of sales you are in?
1. Your mgmt chain wants to keep you over-performing. They NEED you in your current role to make THEIR numbers.
2. You will likely take a pay cut. Mgrs frequently have a slightly higher base salary, and unless all the reps on your team are performing well, you will always make less than your best reps in commission.
3. If you want a mgmt job because of the increased/different responsibilities & title- not the money, maybe look on a different team within your co. or look outside.- be aware that management can mean more 'babysitting'; HR issues; and a lot more reacting to internal fire drills than face time with customers.
4. Some companies are awesome about promoting and grooming for success. Some mgrs are EXPECTED to groom their employees. Not all companies (certainly none of my previous employers!) have that type of culture.
Oh, I’m in software sales
If you’re a top performer at a small company, the company may depend heavily on the revenue that you generate and be fearful of taking a risk (both with a new rep and a new manager) on your development. Can a top performing IC make more than a first-line manager; sure. Can you achieve your long-term career goals without taking some risks at times; probably not. Figure out why you want to go into management and recognize that there are a lot of ways to be a leader and grow inside of both manager roles and IC roles.
Do you see yourself as a leader? Sure there will be a pay, cut but in my experience either you want to be in management to have a profound impact on your team, or in some cases to maybe not have as much direct pressure.
