I always go chronologically myself. I tell students to use chronological so my notebooks match. If they use other sections, they are on their own. My files are a combo that make sense only to me (alpha, subject, chron, as most appropriate to me)
Notes are meant to help the student. Tell them to do what works best for them after giving different examples.
I show them how I keep my class journal (chronologically with a task list at the back) and then I kind of just let them choose what works for them. It's an easy lesson in organization and time management and sparks good discussions when someone can't find what they're looking for in their notebook and needs help. Most of my students choose to do it chronologically as well.
Chronological order works better for me because our skills are taught in grading period blocks determined by the curriculum guide. The notebook is electronic, so students keep a table of contents by date, skill, and SOL.
