Deal toys are fun. I have a collection of them that I still have kept over the years.
In my experience, usually the client or if there is an investment bank involved do the deal toys. Never made them at the firm when I was there and haven’t gotten any in my 5 years of being in house
I do buy Montblanc pens from the Cruse collection. You can only get them online. If you’re buying them in bulk, they are approximately half the price of their base pen. I put a "thank you from my name" on the top, making sure my name is there. Most people assume it is a $1000 pen when it is a $200 pen, but still a very nice pen regardless.
This is just personal preference but I’m a big fan of deal toys/mementos. For a while it was in vogue to have some custom acrylic/lucite cubes made to memorialize the transaction. According to some of the partners at my firm, they’ve kindof fallen out of fashion, but in my opinion, they’re still really cool and I’d love to receive one. They look great as office decorations. Here’s an example of what they look like: https://cpresence.com/deal-toys-101/deal-toy-techniques/lucite-embedment/?utm_term=lucite%20embedments&utm_campaign=Lucite+(GS-TCP)&utm_source=adwords&utm_medium=ppc&hsa_acc=4922709343&hsa_cam=6537889579&hsa_grp=77242459583&hsa_ad=384511889918&hsa_src=g&hsa_tgt=kwd-299649293214&hsa_kw=lucite%20embedments&hsa_mt=b&hsa_net=adwords&hsa_ver=3&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIv8eAi4KM_gIVFBTUAR3VWg_iEAAYASAAEgLCvPD_BwE
I’ve also noticed no one does them anymore! I wonder why people feel like they’re out of fashion. They’ve always made me happy.
I thought deal toys flowed the other way
Traditionally I think the bankers did them but on deals where there’s no banker my firm has done them. And a couple times I got them from the client.
At my last firm, I noticed some doing real estate closings used a special heavyweight firm pen and like one of those leather folio holders for legal pads with the firm name and would give the same pen that the homeowners or business owners signed with to the client upon closing. I do M&A and securities and don’t know that we give any closing gifts
We have cups with our logo, a good pen, Starbucks gift card and then depending on the season we do a hot chocolate mix with fun toppings, tea and honey, a summer theme, and so on. It’s really cute when all thrown together
Yes, it is quite common for real estate agents to give closing gifts to their clients as a gesture of appreciation for their business and to help foster a positive relationship. The type of gift can vary widely depending on the agent's personal style, budget, and the client's preferences. Some popular options include personalized items such as engraved keychains or picture frames, gift baskets with gourmet treats or home goods, or even experiences such as spa days or restaurant gift cards. Ultimately, the goal is to show your clients that you value their business and are grateful for the opportunity to work with them.
I agree with this. I do CRE and have never given or received a closing gift for a commercial deal. I have friends who are residential brokers who always give a nice “welcome home” basket at closing, and I’ve received some small gifts from residential agents for representing their client on a deal.
