Never too late to be happy. Even one day will make it all worthwhile. Stay strong and follow your heart. Everyone deserves to be happy, alone or married.

Since this is a consulting bowl: the past is a collection of sunk costs. What you have to decide is where to invest your time and energy from here on out. If you are miserable and stay, it is because you believe there is a way to change that with investment. If you move on, I’m sure you can find happiness with commitment of your time and energy. The world is a big and beautiful place and you have a lot of years ahead of you to enjoy them. Good luck. Be brave.

I think we need an over 40 bowl

like

Nope. Its just life we are all fumbling through it. And all end up in the same place.

like

Not at all. I am 43 and contemplating change myself. Do not fear the unknown to the point that it makes a miserable marriage more attractive to you.

like

I gave up more than half so that I could just write a check and walk away. Worth every penny.

like

That’s deep AT2

like

D5, disagree. If the marriage sucks and they’re unhappy then that’s a shitty way to raise a kid. If it’s not about the marriage anymore then the marriage will fall apart and that’s no good for the kid. Need to look after yourself and your marriage first otherwise you won’t be able to support other people.

like

Never too late. Don’t let fear hold you back from the life you want and deserve. Chances are that your spouse is equally miserable. Try to work things out if you can, but if not, do both of you a favor and get out.

like

Was 45. Best decision of my life

like

I just did it and I’m on the brink of 40. Happiness is way better than the alternative. One thing to consider...the job makes it really hard to meet people. Consider putting work on the back burner and focus on you for a while.

like

Yea, but your net worth will half though? And you gotta pay child support. this is why I can’t get married. #tooscared 🤦‍♂️

like

I did it!
And after a few years met the person I should have been with long ago

like

Dude not saying you should or shouldn't leave but here's another perspective.

How sure are you that it's your marriage specifically that's causing you unhappiness? As opposed to general malaise, midlife discontent, too much travel, etc.

Is there another variable in your life that you can adjust?

like

@DD1 - same here. I used to dread the financial hit but in the end after writing the check, I felt so free. Granted, ending a long term marriage/relationship is difficult, and one should expect to experience a wide range of emotions (I ranged from extremely happy to downright gloomy), but in the end, I was much happier to be out of the relationship. It was worth every penny.

like

D3 agree. Unmarried here but my brother is in a miserable marriage and neither of them will leave due to a kid. They think it will mess her up. I keep trying to impart that she is already messed up due to the environment she lives in with 2 miserable parents. OP is unmarried I believe, so that lessens the burden of leaving

like

I was only 32, but writing the check and walking away was the best thing ever.

like

You’ve got one life to live. No do overs. You’ve got at most 40 more healthy years. Do you wanna be happy or not?

like

I did it at 42. Happier now, and my kiddo sees a happier Mom and Dad. Money was an adjustment, but in my state the cost is what it is, no fault.

Fear is also about knowing your about to do something amazing. Tough, a ‘life script’ all our rom-cons suck at, and will force you to redefine many things...household, circle of friends, social, new relationship w this person, meeting others...to name a few. But, alternative is unhealthy and unfair to you both. Counseling can really help to start the transition. I see s therapist, she helps me redefine too...in short- you are smart, you know you need to explore this, and you get to change your mind. You can do this, whatever your decision

On the topic of intimacy with partners… I’ve been with my boyfriend for 2 years and the past year his libido has dropped to zero. Mostly due to work stress (he says). Whenever I try to initiate, he always shuts me down and says he’s not in the mood. I even touch him and he gets hard but stops me as soon as I try to unzip him. We went from once a week to maybe once a quarter.

I’ve talked to him about it and he says I should take care of myself. So frustrated. 😭😭

Only real negative is I can’t vacation with my family in March due to my busy time.

Confession: The only in-law that I had a great relationship with passed away unexpectedly. The two remaining in-laws were on thin ice with me prior due to years of drama, nagging, and disgusting display of wealth. I want to have a family and a future that is drama-free and full of love and don’t want to surround myself with negativity.

Cons: Its a startup, the solution they offer is adjacent to my desired industry, its a very small team so I wouldn’t grow my network as much, tech stipend for new laptop (but they don’t provide a work one)

I currently work as an APM at a FAANG company but recently received an offer to join an MBB. I’m very excited about the role but didn’t realize I’d need to take a pay cut when I applied (~100k base + ~20k bonus + ~60k equity vs. 90k base + 10-20k bonus). Considering that I currently work 40-60 hours/week, I’ll be making significantly less per hour at the MBB. I’m very interested in the opportunity but also don’t want to make a poor financial decision early in my career. Thank you for your time!
