Hey there! I was in a similar position these past few weeks, in fact I just returned to work from my sick leave.
Remember: your health (both physical and mental) are more important than the firm. If I died tonight the firm will continue to function. Also I don’t know anyone on their death bed who’d have said they wished they’d worked more.
As you’re feeling the burnout, it’s extremely important that you take a step back. I’d suggest visiting your GP and explaining them that you’re going through this and any sensible doctor will agree that you need time off. Take sick leave, for at least 2 weeks. Trust me, I was at the verge for quitting without anything lined up and no savings but found this to be a better option. Now, get a sick leave note and send it to your resourcing manager and HR, and any manage or partner you directly work with. Let them know that you’ll have NO access to your laptop or work phone. Once they acknowledge receipt of your note lock your work devices away! Also a side note, there is no need for you to disclose reason for the sick leave, legally they can’t ask you and it should be enough if the note says you’re unwell/unfit from xx until yy.
Now, during those 2 weeks, get out of the house! It’s easy said than done but you’ll feel so much better. Go to a museum. Or a park. Or go see a movie by yourself. Download headspace and meditate first thing in the morning. But most of all a) be gentle with yourself, just go with the feeling... feel like painting again even though you haven’t painted since high school and had no time to do during audits, well guess I can stop by a hobby shop and pick new paints? B) contact Employee Assistant Programme EAP service if you’re office offers it (the confidential service that’s often by your medical insurance). If not, set up a session with a therapist anyway. You’re going through a lot and having an expert listen to you and guide your thoughts really helps!
And of course, once you start feeling less like undead (the way I felt) it does help to update CV and start applying for jobs, or better, contact the top recruiter firms like Morgan McKinley etc and talk to them about the jobs you’re looking for etc. I realised that I couldn’t contact recruiters and had no idea what type of jobs I wanted until I went on that break. You probably need it too! Also, one good recruiter is better than 10 that will contact you through LinkedIn.
Also, don’t be hard on yourself to be productive. All the best and let me know if you want to chat more.
I’m curious how the process of sick leave went? I tried to do the same because I became severely depressed after last busy season. I tried to take leave, but the medical leave agent gave me such a hard time. I went to a counselor and had my medication increased, but still nothing. With busy season around the corner, I’m feeling just like I did back then. I don’t know what to do anymore
remember: it's ok to feel depressed and anxious and for you not to want to get out of bed. we all need rest and depression can sometimes be your body saying woah woah slow down I like this break we are on.
I have taken medical leave. I spoke to HR and told her my situation (which I didn't have to but I trust her) and then got a doctor's note. you need a doctor's note for long term leave which is anything longer than 5 days. this started a separate process with a third party that handled the rest of the paperwork/process.
my note was for an indefinite amount of time at the beginning, but I believe the long term leave benefit can be used for up to 26 weeks off depending on the situation.
also getting on meds was really helpful for me. I had a history of depression and wasn't on my meds during my downswing. I also have found that not drinking has turned things around immensely... I had been drinking to help cope with the stress which was causing more stress and so on.
anyway, take care of yourself. you're more important than this firm. you are priority #1.
I'm a manager and took 2 months. This was right around CRT for my manager promotion.
In workday it looks like you can request a leave of absence from the homepage using the "absence" icon. I thought there was a place in there you could find your hr person as well but maybe I'm thinking of talent link cause I can't find it in here.
Even if you don't take a leave, be honest with your coach and HR about your capacity. Mental capacity is real and sometimes it's either stick within your boundaries or leave and usually the firm would rather keep a good person around.
(Cont) get myself out of bed in the morning since I know nothing is urgently waiting to get done. I get sick all the time now; I’ve always had allergy and sinus problems, but they seem to be even worse lately and I constantly feel like crap. But then I start thinking about if I had more time to actually make myself meditate and exercise and eat better and sleep better... would my physical and emotional health get better? So now I’m debating asking for a reduced schedule (like 60%), taking a short mental health leave, or the antidepressant. Has anyone taken a mental health leave or reduced schedule drastically? I think I need some way of resetting mentally. I think antidepressant would help, but part of me HATES that work has pushed me that far. Should I be reassessing work instead?
PwC has 6 free mental health visits through LiveWell Resources. You can find the info on HQ. And free emotional heal support through the Ginger Emotional Support app again found on HQ. I hope these resources help. Most important to take care of yourself.
Hi. I know what you are going through. I burned out and everything was basically on me. I was doing so much work. I got the the point where I had panic attacks. At one point I couldn’t breathe. My VP actually came out his leadership meeting and told my manager. I told my manager several times that this is too much for me. My manager was schooled on how to be a manager. My point is that never put a job before yourself and family. Everybody is replaceable. Don’t think twice.
Wine.
Id honestly avoid wine or drinking if you can. It'll make your anxiety and depression worse. Not to mention you can fall into a cycle of use that can further amplify the problem over time
Work out!
