I’m currently interviewing for a hybrid Jr UX Designer role for a fragrance company. The compensation is between 70-80k. I searched the market rate in NYC and the salaries are between 103-120k. I assume this is based on the company, industry, and experience. I have a graphic design background with 10 years experience and have a springboard certification for UX. I don’t want to get low balled as I have been in the past. Is it unreasonable to ask for what’s market value when it’s a team of 5?

Hi everyone!

I have an interview with the CTO of a growing startup on Monday. It’s for a technical product owner position. I’ve already interviewed with their lead product designer and technical PM so far which included a case study round as well. This round with the CTO will be my last round. What kind of questions should I expect? Specific inputs and general motivation will definitely help since I’ve been doubting my capabilities a lot recently.

I want to move to NYC so that means a new job search.
I wonder how people prepare for their portfolio while your work is owned by your current company. Do you recreate some of those work and explain in your case study?

And, how much of salary do you need in NYC as still a junior level UX/UI designer?
YOE in UX/UI field: 2 years and 3 years of some other design experiences.

Anyone have any experience interviewing for a Product Designer role at KOHO, the Canadian fintech company?

I just interviewed with Amazon for the Sr. PM position. I had four back to back interviews. Two of which were also PMs. However, who was the bar raiser in this case if the third was a UI Designer and the fourth was a Software Engineer? 🤔

I have a opportunity but I’m not sure how to maximize it or even have the conversation. I’ve been approached by two different companies to take senior designer or higher positions. I wasn’t looking and I’m very happy with where I am but people recommended me and a recruiter reached out. I’ve chatted with both and one wants me to interview next week. The other wants to have another chat and “try to make the job more shiny to me”. How can I use this to gain a bump at my current job?

So I just joined a team as a product designer under the pretence I would be acting as a UX designer.

In talks with product managers, they express that their role encompasses being advocates for the user. Which is great, but they also stated their role is to conduct interviews, determine and solve problems, and provide rough wireframes of their proposed solution.

They say they'll involve me in the process but I am worried I'll be boxed into being just a UI designer.

Has anyone dealt with this?

Hello! I'm currently a product designer at a startup and we're currently hiring for a Lead Product Designer. I've been helping my director write up an interview format and was wondering if there was anything different about lead designer interviews? When I was going through the interview process at my company I had the following steps: phone screen, hiring manager screen, onsite (portfolio review, design collab, stakeholder collab, eng collab). Any additional info will be much appreciated!

My team is interviewing for Product Designers (Intelligence platform company). They want to do a live design challenge or task. Any advise on how to structure these? I want to be fair to the designer. Mostly interested in observing their design process and understanding which questions they would ask at each stage

In the actual workspace, how different is UX from Product design? I’m trying to transition into UX from product/UI and it looks like a lot of the job postings are identical to what I do as a product designer. Minus the research of course. Can I leverage my 7 years of experience when applying and negotiating? Or am I considered a relative entry level UXD in this sense?

Nearing the end of the interview process for a mid level Product Designer role but experience wise I’d be considered more junior. What do I ask for in terms salary? (Sorry if it’s a stupid question)

I’ve gone through whiteboarding and a design challenge so skill wise I think I’ve proven to them I am capable.

They gave me a range for the role so would I just go with that? It’s higher than average in the market and one I’d be happy with but I feel weird since I’m not actually mid level.

What would be the major differences between the consulting industry and in-house as a junior UX designer? I'm on the third round of interview for the two types of companies above. With 1yoe of startup experience, I want to hear more experienced designers’ opinions on growth or anything I should consider / consider asking during the interview. Thank you!

As a UX designer or front end developer looking for other opportunities, what do you show when asked for mock ups for interviews? How should I provide mockups that are proprietary to my current firm.

I have an offer from One great company that I need to reply to by end of the week and Google had reached out to me after two months of radio silence wanting to move me forward to the last interview round. The offer I got was for a product design position while google wants to potentially hire me as a visual designer… what do I do??? I’m so stressed. I don’t know if I should just accept the offer and then jump ship if Google decides to hire me.

A friend of mine was telling me how this isn’t a good idea because locs are too ethnic and not corporate looking enough for an interview. But I’m a designer. I do not work for corporate America. Should your hair style really matter that much for an interview?

I f**ed up my interview for a UX designer role at a 11-50 employees boutique company out of covid depression. They’ve been looking to fill that role for 3mo as far as I know. There’s now also a UI designer opening. Are my chances thin for either roles when I do apply?

I have interviews scheduled with thermo fisher and Boeing. Would Deloitte be worth leaving the other opportunities?

How much travelling would I have to do as a consultant?

I have a PM interview coming up and the interviewer is a Product Designer. I’ve never interviewed with a Designer before, so I’m looking for guidance on what kind of things could be asked and suggestions on what/how to prepare. I assume they want to understand how I partner with design team, how I make/help make decisions, but this is high level. Can anyone share more specifics?

Why do job applications for art directors have way more requirements than copywriters these days? I’m sick of being expected to not only art direct and design, but to be the illustrator, animator, editor, 3D artist, UX/UI designer, etc. all while my copywriter friends snag interviews and gigs left and right with ease bc hiring managers just expect them to do the 1 job they’re supposed to do! I need a job and I’m so so so tired of it!

Question about interview process: I’m transitioning my career to product design and have been applying for a new role. I heard back from a recruiter for a product designer position and asked me to complete a design exercise. The thing is that I’ve not even had a phone interview yet. Is this normal? Also, how long should a design exercise take? The only thing I received is a list of prompts choose from. Thanks!

Hello, business owners and creative community leaders. Since moving to SW Florida end of 2019, professional life has been a f*ckin doozy (for many of us.) For 15 years I’ve been an art director / brand / designer and can say I’ve done well.

After many connections and interviews and tests and hoops I’m not getting hired. Feeling defeated, frustrated — bang head here!

I'm a budding UX Designer with no exp in the field besides one client project and some school ones. However, for 5+ years I've been a part of User Testing groups and have participated in user research interviews for different companies like Lions Gate, the Canadian Government, Pinterest, etc. I did it to make a little bit of pocket change, but it ended up teaching me about how user researchers collect data and what types of questions they ask.
Would it be valuable experience to put on my resume?

I applied to Deloitte for the Workday Solutions Designer role. Went through the entire interview process (3 rounds). Within 3 weeks, I heard from the recruiter saying that they wanted to give me an offer.
However, my current company was their client and as per their contract, they wanted me to tell my company before they could hand out the offer letter. I agreed, but asked for more information about the contract (start date, salary, etc). Since then I've been ghosted. Whats going on?

I’ve been working with a startup for 2 months as a UX Designer - they are so unorganized so I’m wondering how I can show my process in a case study when they aren’t keeping track of metrics or KPIs or anything else because they are moving so fast. Any advice?
