An employee calls in, saying they can't come in because they need to take their cat to the vet. Is this an acceptable reason for someone to miss work or even an important meeting?

Compassion is something that we lack these days. Pets are dear to their owners and for some individuals they provide love and comfort. They are considered part of the family and when they die they are missed and mourned. It is true unless you experience something for yourself sometimes you cannot relate to the individual going through that difficult time. So I don't need to say the rest you know my stance on this and that would be to have compassion and understanding that this could be considered a family member for this person and yes they would like to take the time to take their pet to the vet.

likehelpful

My best advice when taking PTO it best to keep it simple. For instance “I am using a day of PTO tomorrow.” Thats it. Most companies are not obligated to provide PTO for “pet related matters.”

This is just as an acceptable reason as someone who needs to take their child to a doctor. I recently had an emergency vet visit with my fur baby at 7 in the morning. I texted my boss to let her know and her response was take care of your baby. She even checked in later in the day on him and continued to over the next few days. I’m choosing my fur baby over my job every single day if needed. Compassion is lacking in most of the job world, employees stay loyal when they are treated with kindness. And let’s be real, most meetings can be an email these days.

As the HR manager, how can you determine what is acceptable if you are not the owner or CEO of the company you work for? Not all policies apply to every business. For instance, I lost my husband to cancer, was approved for FMLA, and adopted a Bichon Frise shortly after his death. I had him registered as an ESA per the policy. As much as I love him, I never called in sick or missed work because of him. Animals do not have the same level of influence as a sick child, spouse, or parent. If people cannot agree with this, then they should be self employed.

Why are so many people beating up the original poster over this? Maybe they wanted to see how other companies handle this. Maybe the employee in question is a problem employee and has used every excuse in the book to miss work. Don't be so judgmental.

Somebody who calls themself 'HR Business Partner' asking for HR advice from Glassdoor 🙄 Clearly in the wrong job!

For what it's worth - 100% you should support this. Dogs, yes. Cats, yes. I might draw the line at goldfish or pet mouse though. 🤔

like

They would need to take Annual Leave, Personal (Sick) leave would not apply.

like

Yes, of course it is

like

Yes that is for pet owners their pets are like their real kids so they care alot

like

I’m compassionate and a pet lover . But when you accepted the terms of employment, this should’ve been raised then. If it wasn’t addressed in your offer, the personnel manual, or your benefits package, it isn’t an excusable exception now. Employment agreements don’t expand retroactively because circumstances changed.

like

Of course. This question lacks humanity.

like

I have two cats of my own, so I get it. You generally don't have to provide an explanation unless you really want to. I think somebody can just say that there's something personal that came up and needs to be addressed.

like

You actually Asked them WHY they called off?
Interesting

like

It depends on the employee. Is this someone who has a habit of calling out "sick" or for various personal emergencies on a more frequent basis than other employees? I have an employee who calls out (no joke) an average of once a week - she's "sick", or her mother is "sick", or her uncle or whoever else, or her toilet is backed up and she has to wait for the plumber, or her dog chewed her keys up and she can't get to her car, etc. (you get what I mean). If THIS employee called out with the "had to take the cat to the vet" excuse, I'd be weary and address it WAY differently that if it was the person who very rarely calls out and has an overall positive employee record.

like

Some people just truly love their animals.

like

Their PTO is their PTO. They owe you no explanation for why they’re using it. In some states an employer cannot request that information by law.

like

As someone who has cats, yes, yes, it is. My cats come first - they are my family and an important part of my life. Any employer who feels otherwise is not an employer I would continue to work for.

like

Absolutely! If they have the leave why not? Especially if it's an emergency. Someone cannot just allow their pet to sit home sick. Pets are just as important as a member of our family, actually their apart of our family. What I normally do for routine care regarding my furbaby is give my employer enough notice in advance unless it's an emergency. I also provide a verification of treatment note from my vet to inform my employer for verification purposes. If it's not an emergency; I would do everything in my power to schedule the appointment on a non-meeting day, if at all possible or after work hours. However, sometimes that is not often possible. Some vets like doctor offices often close pretty early in the day.

like

Really, and you are a HR Business Partner. Not everyone has children. My dog is my child, I would stop the world for him.

like

I would say yes.

like

If you can schedule a vet visit, than try to schedule it in advance, to be considerate to the other employees. If it is an emergency, than of course, take your animal to the vet hospital and it should not count as an infraction.

like

What infraction?? Time off is part of your compensation - just like your paycheck.

Yes!

Your built in BS detector is probably working overtime here. If you’re not sure, ask for a copy of the vet bill for your files.

YES! Pets are family members too... basically equivalent to having a child. Please, the fact that you're asking this question is why employees have a negative stigma against HR professionals.
