In the past six years I’ve grown from an intern to my current position in an average-sized agency (~80 people) in a medium-sized market (Southeast). I’m starting to look for the next opportunity, but not sure how to best position myself and what job to look for. I develop creative myself, with extensive skills in photo/video, Lr, Pr, Ps, Ae and C4d, I manage a team, develop concepts, pitch to clients, pioneer innovations, build case studies & have two masters. What am I & where should I look?

Any copywriters looking for a full time gig? Our Phoenix-based agency, LaneTerralever, is hiring.

We have a solid creative team that I absolutely love working with (most came from places like McCann, FCB, BBDO, Cramer-Krasselt, Sleek Machine, etc).

I finally found a job after being jobless for 2 months! It’s a 6 to 12 month contract and I can start immediately. I know I should be super happy but a part of me is not super excited about this. It’s a level under what I’m used to and from my chat with them it’s not a very strategic/creative role, more doing transcreational stuff. I’m however used to being super involved in all the strat and concepting etc and I’m kinda scared I’ll lose touch with everything I’ve learned so far, esp the strat!

I’m considering a position as an account director at a large agency coming from a media director role at another. (I’ve been client facing for years) are there any hard and fast rules of client management that typically media people wouldn’t deal with DTD? Note: this is more of strategist role and they were looking for heavy media experience but this position is unique in that it will also serve as the liaison between the analytics, creative, and media agencies.

Am learning to inquire, or check in about jobs even if it seems like an agency isn’t hiring. Because they don’t make ton of open creative positions public. Also consider how likely these spots aren’t dropped into the PoC databases/new sites. So you see others getting hired, but never see those jobs post... yeah I’m late to this game. And apparently naive.

Resources/courses/tips for merging career path with brand or creative strategy?

My career path has been anything but linear - interned in creative (copy), worked in SEO/content creation until I got my BA in advertising (minor in Psych). Worked first two years in digital media, then two in branded content + project/account management. Now in an SAE role, which I enjoy but want to continue my education in line with my interest in the big picture planning and strategy.

So my questions:

I’ve worked from the creative side to strategy to accounts to client side and have done so all over. I had to take about a year and a half long break for health reasons and am having a hard time having anyone even look at my resume. Are there ways I can show recruiters that I’m interested in settling down and building a true foundation at one company? Or is there a program (not requiring a bachelors) that can be taken to increase my network and likelihood of landing a position?

How did all the tech/media companies decide there should be a “creative strategist” title where the job is clearly creative, not strategy?

“Strategist” = noun, person, role.
“Creative” = adjective, modifier (in this case).
“Creative strategist” is a strategist, even if a lame sort of strategist, but not a creative.

Did they all realize how dumb “strategic creative” sounds, so they subverted grammar to make it sound better?

It’s mostly for creatives supporting media sales side.

Is it impossible for me to get my start in advertising if I'm not part of MAIP (I'm a POC)? I've been looking for a position since March, and I saw recently a lot of MAIP creative interns have been hired fulltime at their respective internship. Is it hopeless for me? Yes, I have a portfolio if anyone is hiring for a Jr CW position.

What are some possible exit opportunities in the creative field for a tech consultant (idk if the title matters tbh lol)? I am thinking design and marketing but curious to see if others have insights!

When hiring copywriters, do you prefer a straightforward/standard cover letter or a creative one that tells a more interesting story? I’m not sure there’s consensus here, but would love some personal takes

Folks who do hiring, what do you think of adopting the following question in future interviews?

“Evidence suggests that teams that include a variety of perspectives and backgrounds will often produce more creative solutions and catch mistakes earlier. What background or experiences do you bring that will help broaden the perspective of our team?”

Role at a smaller shop is really asking for it all.

I've been going back and forth with a recreuiter about a position at a smaller creative agency, when I've been in big media agencies my whole career.

It falls within the realm of Project Manager but the job description is literally 30 bullets long that encompasses new biz, copywriting, account mgt, sales, strategy, creative direction, and finaly project mgt.

I'm trying not to see this as a red flag, and more as an opportunity. Any thoughts?

hi, I‘m a Marketing & Advertising graduate looking for a creative position. my absolute goal is being a CD in the distant future. i was thinking how to approach this and decided to look for copywriting positions. however, i‘m self taught in Photoshop and Illustrator and I mostly enjoy doing the visual concept creation but i am nowhere near a graphic designer skill wise. so yeah, this is the dilemma and i‘m looking for any constructive advice and what you would do if you were in my shoes.

Do you think having planning/strategy comms experience helps with ad creative/concepting role later down the track? 🤔

anyone have experience with startups? did you like it? currently interviewing with a small but growing CPG brand to be their head of brand & creative. my background is in creative strategy & comms for a large CPG brand, so the autonomy is exciting - but I want to make sure it’s a move that sets me up for the next one. hiring managers, are you interested by folks that have done startup brand building?

A wonderful friend recommended me to a recruiter, when the recruiter was looking to place a creative.
This role is at a small agency, I’m going to be paired with a Sr. Copywriter. They’re looking for a conceptual thinker and brilliant designer, no pressure.
I have some internships and some freelance under my belt since graduating portfolio school, and a current laptop that’s running on fumes ha.
I’m intimidated, cautious, yet super grateful to finally hear from someone.

which specialty is better for long-term growth, art or copy? I’m in a creative/strategy role in-house where I do some of both, and I’d like to work on getting some more focused projects so I can build out a more compelling portfolio

One of my friend wants to do more creative work but doesn’t have a college degree. Is it hard to get a graphic designer role? Will her portfolio be sufficient?

What’s the vibe at McCann Health NY? A post a few days ago said some C suite layoffs happened. Is that good or bad? Looking at a position there (not creative).

so i’m a productive senior-level creative at mccann ny who’s pretty good at their job but my mind wanders about my self am worth, like anyone i guess. besides having a job which i’m very grateful for, am in a good position and have i achieved something to be proud of at my stage in my career or am i justified feeling like a bum ass??

Is it annoying to message creative directors on linked in if there’s an open role on their creative team? Is there a right way to do it? An agency I’m dying to work for has an open role and I don’t want to get lost in the sea of applications.

I have a foreign friend that is interviewing for a Creative Director role at a big Pharma Agency in NYC. Because he is from South America, I’m gonna Zoom call him to help him practice for the interviw (in English).
Since I’m a strategist, I’m not aware of what questions are asked for a Creative Director role at an interview. Can you folks help me listing the most important questions HR asks, so I can help him practice?

Salary Q: New to Fishbowl + creative/ad agencies and would love any insights from y'all.

I recently got an offer for a producer role that I believe was too low b/c it involves working with devs, dev work myself, and has the combined responsibility of project management and production.

In search, "producer" yields much different results ($$ wise) from "project manager", and from "technical" + "producer/project manager"

Any advice on how I should proceed in navigating negotiations?
