The way I did it was they had one or two daily chores as part of the household. Anything over that had a ‘wage’ to it. Just like life. You have your home and don’t get paid to keep it up, but outside of that you work for pay. Those two dailies were their rooms and one household chore.
The paid ones had different pay to it. Household laundry (sheets, towels etc) were one amount, yard work was another. Depending on difficulty and time, some were more some were less.
I don't think either approach is wrong. I like to link them though, because it teaches work ethic, which is something not focused on enough these days. What good is financial intelligence if they can't hold down a job to earn the income in the first place.
When they were young, it was $5 per week and then increase to $10. I think you have to adjust for inflation etc as they begin to think it's not worth it.
We are four kids and our dad used to give each of us $300 allowance per month from teen year until we got 1st job post university.
Don't do give anything! Made us kids not look for job until after college completed
Get them to look for a side job to earn money and gain work experience
We struggled to find 1st job after graduation
My personal opinion is when my children do chores without me having to ask, that shows responsibility and growth and that deserves a reward! With teens, cash for chores is a good motivator for doing away with entitlement and a lack of independence.
